ISSUE70 - "In any profession-business, politics, education, government-those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."
WORDS: 579
People often confused about the dilemma that how long the leaders should keep in their positions. I agree with the speaker that revitalization through new leadership is very necessary and crucial for the success in most enterprises. Yet, whether those in power should step down after five years is a case-to-case issue.
To begin with, no on can deny the necessarily of leadership transposition. The leadership actually, in my view is about the creation of new ways of life. That is to say, the responsibility of a leader in any realm--business, politics education and so on is to release human potential and lead his or her group to generate a better and original method and idea to advance further and continually, and consequently make the various aspects of peoples' life improved. Limiting the period of leadership is an effective way to prevent abuse of power and lack of initiative--the detrimental even fatal problems of a group. Only through the enforcing the press of leadership transposition, individuals in power will feel great pressure to finish missions in order to benefit people in his tenure with their maximum efforts. When referring to outstanding leaders who support the restriction on the tenure of leadership, one may fast bethink of George Washington, the first president of America, who gave up reappointment after 8 years in the position and strongly against the lifelong system. This great behavior left far-reaching influence on the history, and also personally setting an example of power limitation.
Not only the restriction on tenure can prevent power abuse of the leaders, but it also offers opportunities to other individuals who possess the equal or better capability to be leaders, and consequently instill the innovational and fresh ideas to the groups. New leaders often have distinct opinions and methods to manage the enterprises and create new environment to facilitate other people's development as well as his own. The new master of my university bring about his original way to administer teachers and students, which is more effective and efficiency, significantly improve the study and research lever of the university. Limitation on the period of power also spur everyone in the team to strive harder, which will contributes to increasing enthusiasm and impetus on work. The ultimately result is the whole development of the team.
However, the claim that the transposition of leadership should be done no more than five years is not reasonable and not always benefit a group. It may cause the leader use every means --- even the immoral and illegal ones to attain his goal and achievements in his period of power. In addition, in some profession, especially the business and economy realms, relatively short period of leadership is not proper. The reason is that if the period is too short, leaders may step down only after they just hold an effective way to manage the enterprise without operating it. Alan Greenspan, whose status is only inferior to the president in the United States, held the position of chairman of The Federal Reserve System for 17 years, effectively control and stabilizes the global market until retirement, is a strikingly demonstration to this point of view.
In sum, transposition of leadership is undoubtedly necessary for not only the leaders in tenure and those who are preparing for the leadership, but also the whole group. However, how long a leader should hold his position is depend on the attributes of the realm as well as his or her ability. |
