Arts, the productions which are created by human's skill and imagination, and can express human's ideals, emotions, impressions, are very important in human's civilization. The speaker asserts hidden ideas and impulses of a society could be revealed by the arts. I agree with this view, however, the arts not only reflect society's ideas and urges, but also indicate the artists' personal aesthetic values, and some arts would lead the trend of prevalence.

Literature is one of the most important parts of arts. On the one hand, it can reveal problems of society, specially the critical realism literature. One of the famous realism writers in the USA is Mark Twain. His work Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a profound book which criticizes the truculence of fights between the feudal families, condemns the evil of slavery system, and requests everyone to have the right to freedom regardless of ethnicity. It reveals the true situation of the society at that time. On the other hand, literature can provoke and encourage people. For example, in the World War II period, Lu Xun, a famous writer in China, composed many articles which reveal the cruelty and inhumanity of Japanese invaders. Those literary arts roused Chinese people to fight with the invaders, and inspirit Chinese people to save their country. To a certain extent, these arts impulse the progresses of society

Architecture, another kind of arts, also can reveal, even influence the society. For instance, there are many kinds of different architecture styles. Baroque is the famous one, which appears in 17th century, and is based on the Renaissance. Baroque is characterized by free shape, magnificent decoration and sculpture, strong colors. This style plays an important role of fighting against classical rigid architecture in the society at that time. Because of its magnificence and shape freedom, it also was once widespread in Europe. The prevalence of Baroque revealed the truth that freedom is the eternal aim that people seek. It also prompted the Renaissance, and helped the society leave the Dark Age and impulse the society into a new age.

However, some important paintings maybe can not reflect society immediately, but these paintings can indicate the personal idiosyncratic aesthetic values of those artists. And they would be accepted and prevail in the future, such as works of Picasso, Dali, Van Gogh. Picasso's impressionism was not accepted by artists. The preeminent painting--Dove created in the World War Two expressed Picasso's enormous indignation to the war and the strong desire to the peace. Dove successfully embodied this hidden feeling under the truculent domination of Nazi, and receives the high praise after the war. Because of this meaningful painting, dove becomes the symbol of peace which is accepted around the world. The surrealism painter Dali had the same situation as Picasso. He is an outstanding artist with extraordinary imagination and creativity. His extremely unorganized works indicate his subjective idiosyncratic thought. His art technique of changing subjective thought in to objective painting was high valued by people, though his works do not reflect the society.

In sum, arts have many different forms, and any kind of arts contains human's wisdom and spirit. Revealing the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society is not the only function of arts. Arts can also propagandize artists' values, ideas, even ethics.
