Does the study of history place too much emphasis on individuals? The speaker claims so in the reason that the most events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. It is true that much emphasis is placed on individuals in the study of history, however, I think the emphasis is not too much and it is reasonable to do so.

Admittedly, many groups of people who also created the history were forgotten by history, and people often contribute the significant event to individuals. For instance, many people claim that it is Napoleon who consolidated and institutionalized many reforms of the French Revolution, conquered the larger part of Europe and did much to modernize the nations he ruled. However, many groups of people contributing much to all these honors are ignored. In fact, all the honor should belong to many people by not only Napoleon. But today only the name of Napoleon is remembered and most of other people who helped him succeed and play a indispensable pole are buried in the history except only a few.

Nevertheless, it is inappropriately to say that the most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by individuals but by some groups of people as the speaker claims. In fact, individuals and groups of people created history together. Firstly, individuals frequently provide the necessary impetus for history. History need heroes and the society need leaders. Leaders guide the people to create history providing advanced thoughts and hope, further more, they have the greatest courage and firmest belief. Without leaders, it is probable that people would like a group of flies and do not know where to go, what to do, let alone gather all the people's power to make significant events and trends in history. Without leaders, nothing can be done except being puzzled and infusion. We can say that, without Napoleon, many events in history would never happen; and without a leader like Napoleon, the people who created the history together with Bonaparte would not gather together, not to mention that they would create the history alone. Secondly, leaders can also do nothing without the help of other people. However great dream may Napoleon have, how is it possible for him to conquered most of Western Europe and Egypt for France alone? And how is it possible for him to instituting reforms in these new territories aimed at guaranteeing civil liberties and improving the quality of life? In sum, leaders and people cannot get to large success without each other.

In addition, the fact that the study of history places much emphasis on individuals is reasonable, and sometimes necessary. On one hand, it is easier and more effective to study aiming at the conduct and thought of individuals who played leading roles in one significant event in history than a group of people. Since leaders are the cores of the event, his thought and conduct reflect the event more centrally. What’s more, their materials are easier to collect and settle. On the other hand, it is needs of individuals and society to emphasize the famous few in the study of history. Firstly, people tend to admire some great people and place them as an example of what he want to be. Everyone has admired a great people since his or her youth. And this is the nature of human because people tend to follow the goodliness and hope to be better. So, many people engaging in study of history tend to study the famous few he or her interest in. Secondly, it is the need of society to study the thought and conduct of the great few. From the Bible to the Greece Myth, there are numberless heroes who save the world or his people. The reason is that it is commonly accepted by the society to educate the next generation and guide people to goodliness by this means. Society need to understand the behavior of individuals who played a crucial part in history deeper.

To sum up, it is reasonable to place much emphasis on individuals in the study of history, who created history together with nameless people. However, though we admit this fact, it is necessary to remmenber that history is not only made by individuals and the function of other people should not be overlooked.
