43"To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
In this time of emphasizing honesty and morality, this is nowhere more true than to agree with the speaker that high ethical and moral standards have become an essential element of a successful leader. However, the author unnecessarily extend this standard to the “highest”, while ignore other possible factors that may be inevitable to an effective leader. In this essay, my point of contention with the speaker involves what should an effective leader be and what level of ethical and moral standards he/she should have.
Firstly, I’d like to talk about what kind of essential qualities an effective leader should possess. The first and most important element is to be a good decision-maker. He/She should be competent enough to decide what should be done or what shouldn't in a short time so that the whole group could make an immediate response to any tough problem. The second element is to be a good friend of all others, which means the leader must have a good relationship with his/her underlings so that solidarity and team work could be raised. The third is to be a good influencer. That is to say the leader should have a power of influencing the others, so powerful that all the members of the group would take his/her orders as priority mandate from the bottom of their hearts, not unwillingly forced to do. Besides, the effective leader should also know how to take in charge of the complex human relationship and tackle the most difficult problems, which may be a dilemma.
After the above analysis, I should concede that the author is on the correct logical side of this issue. To conclude from the above paragraph, we know that the most effective leader is the one who can make a decision quickly and solve the current problems at once. In addition to his/her own ability, that requires cooperation, which at a large extent decided by his/her influence on the underlings. Two kinds of influence can be conducted: One is the compelling influence, largely depends on tradition, including the leader's power, statue, longevity and so on; the other is spontaneous influence, which decided by the leaders character and morals. Once the leader's character and morals step on to a certain high level, identification and imitation will be manifested by the followers. These actions will ensure both solidarity and loyalty of the members of a team. Identification makes followers feel they belong to part of the leader or part of the team while imitation drives them to posit the leader as their paradigm. In this way, the leader will be viewed as the followers’ terminal aim, the aim of hope.
For public well-known leaders, character and morals are even more important. Sometimes we can see when there comes an election, the public vote their candidates, to a large extent, not by their capability of debating on political and social issues but by their personal moralities. For instance, George Washington was elected the first president of America, when he was still a general, largely because of his honesty and high moral standards of his personal charm, not by his feats on politics. Also, anyone with low ethical and moral standards is hardly to undertake the attack of his/her opponents as well as the mass media, let alone “an effective leader”.
On the other hand, ethical and moral standards always contradict and conflict with power and politics. They are believed to be two elements can't be mixed together. One famous scholar once said: Once a person nominated himself/herself president of America, he/she is not good enough to be a president in ethic level. This is true when sometimes leaders can not tell the truth because too much thing should be considered, such as the reaction of the public, the serious result of telling the truth. So, there's no need and no chance for an effective leader always keep the highest ethical and moral standards since “virtue is not the most important element to distinguish great leaders from the normal person”, as Nixon once said.
To be sure, high ethical and moral standards are most likely to yield reliabilities, respects and reputations that serve the leader to be effective. The chief point is to know the exact moment of when to take the reins and when to let it go. |
