TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS:611 TIME: 12:45:00 AM DATE: 05/09/2006
Turning on your computers and getting onto the internet, you can find quite a lot of new or other information about scandals on almost all the fields, especially on politics, academia and business. These scandals, of course, focus our attention on problems and usually they cannot be revealed by speakers or reformers, which make people think about the policies better.
To begin with, in politics, the scandals can help leaders, common people and the governments reconsider the validity of the policies, laws and moral standards our society has. In history, there was Watergate Scandal and nowadays there are even more, such as Iraq prison abuses scandal, Philippines ex-president gambling scandal and the Chinese officers corruption, after knowing each of which, people first got shocked and then drew enormous attention to them. Thus, people began to realize the cracks in the systems and bring out more delicate ideas to improve them. Take the Chinese officers corruption for example, as more and more corrupted government officers were revealed, both Chinese government and common people focus on it, which becomes a focus of the mass media. Then people were forced to think about why those officers turned to corruption so that more reasonable policies and effective laws were developed to supervise the officers and then reduce the cases.
When it comes to academia, scandals can also help people understand the academic moral standard and be aware of academic fraud. Dr. Hwang Woo-suk, a professor in Seoul National University was famous for his achievement in animal cloning field, especially for his two remarkable papers in cloned stem cells. What is shocked to all, however, it was proved to be fabricated one year after the papers was published. After the scandal was released, people begin to think the reason: Why did he take risk in cheating? What was the crack in the academic system so that he can cheat many experts in the field and the Korean government? After investigating, we understand that the fierce competition in the field made the ambitious professor take risk in fabricating. Also, people trust the experts very much so that they failed to doubt about the result, believing it without further inspection. So the scandal itself lead people to pay more attention to the pressure scientists are suffering so that better evaluation system can be developed to release some of the pressure and always be brave to question the authorities.
Also, in business, the scandals function similar to them in politics and academia. The best example that came to my mind is the Enron Scandal. After it was exposed, many big American companies were inspected and even many others worldwide as well. As a result, credit in the market was greatly improved since most companies learned a lesson from Enron Scandal. Thus, there is no denying the function of scandals in business, which can enhance the business morality.
Admittedly, scandals also result in bad influences to the society. Also take the Enron scandal for example; it leaded people to begin to doubt if big companied are trustworthy, which caused a storm in stock market. Many people even doubt about the whole American economic system so that a crisis of confidence was triggered. Obviously, it is not good to focus too much on scandals themselves.
In sum, scandals really help people focus on the problems we may have the system no mater in politics, academia or business although obviously, to some extent, can have bad impacts in a short time. Therefore, we should realize the value of all kinds of scandals and make full use of it to improve the society system without paying too much attention to the scandals themselves.
