TOPIC: ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

This argument concludes that if all Valu-Mart stores increase the stock of home office machines and office supplies, their office-supply departments will enhance significant profit to be the most profitable component of their stores. To support this conclusion, the arguer cites a statistic survey that over 70 percent of the respondents reported that they are required to take more work home than they were before, so the arguer concede that they must be purchase their home office machines. Based on these view, the arguer suggest their company to increase their stock of home office machines and office devices for pursueing dramatic profit. As I observe, I am afraid that this argument is basis on some unconvincing conclusion.
First of all, the arguer supposes that people who must do their work home need several office machines, but this argument has not cited convincing evidence to show us these requirements from people. If these people just do some documents work, it is unnecessary for them to increase their home office machines, and then that Valu-Mart want to rely on this trend to enhance profit is not reality and objectivity.
Secondly, this survey which are cited as evidence to prove that most respondents claimed that their work home are increasing supply little support to this argument. Because the arguer has not ruled out detail information about their condition, such as their careers, healthy situations and work environments.Perhaps these respondents are mostly pregnancy women, who are allowed to work home for her time; and maybe most respondents are free authors, who only need their inspiration, paper and pen; or perhaps their company building needs to be repaired, so they have to work home for a time. All of these possible reasons showing that there is no need to increase office device are ignored by arguer.
Moreover, there are several essential elements effect on the increasement of profit. such as efficient sale access, effective management and sufficient market research, all of which are not cited to us to support this view that their office-supply departments will enhance dramatic profit, science they are sure that people are indeed desired to purchase home office machines for their work, and there is few other company competing with it.
Consequently, this argument relying on unsufficient evidence and unconvincing conclusion, has not convince us to believe that increasing the office device could satisfy consumers' requirement, and enhance the profit. Until the arguer cites compelling evidence ,such as the statistic data of requirements of office machines from people woking home, the market research for clearing demand of these devices, and feasible business plan, we can not ensure the practicability of this conclusion. |
