Article:
To improve the quality of instruction, is it a must for all college faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses? Although it may make sense in some field of academic world, I would say it is not true in most of conditions.
At the beginning, it should be admitted that in some discipline it does make sense for faculty to do so, especially concerning of applied ones. As an old saying goes:" Practice makes better." For majors such as economics, computer programming, architecture, the words is true. It can be imaged that if an architectural professor had a part-time-job on designing buildings outside the academic world contrasting to the same level one who is not, it is better for him or her to more skilledly guide students who studied on this course. Thus, in this sense, it is good for faculty to do so.
However, the over-spending time working outside the academic world could diminish the quality of instruction. There is an illustration from my experience: genome engineering course was taught by a famous professor of the department, but always, with a rare appearance of the professor, the class was given by his postgraduate students. For the absence reason, we were told that the professor was busy with other work in a laboratory of a local medicine corporation. Without the professor's effective guide, lots of classmates felt the instructional quality of this course was rather low. Therefore, overemphasis the requirement of spend time working outside can lower the quality of instruction.
Moreover, many theoretical fields in college and university are difficult to get into use directly. For instance, the theoretical mathematics, scientific philosophy and so on are hard to get relevant outside world. It is not realistic for the faculty in such disciplines to get a part-time-job to help improving the quality of instruction.
Furthermore, in order to improve the quality of instruction, the time of faculty can be spent on other matters. For application majors, faculty could guide the students on relevant part-time-jobs, through this way the quality of instruction can be improved. For theoretical scientific majors, the better way is to spend more time inside the academic world of the course.
In a few words, the approach spending time working outside the academic world for all faculty can hardly conducted, and therefore with little value to improve the quality of instruction in college and university. |
