TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
WORDS: 597 TIME: 4:47:46 DATE: 2006-7-30
Although the masses as main body of society indeed make significant contribution on achieving the great historic events and trends, in my opinion, great persons few also similarly play an extremely key role in these. In fact, the populace and few social elites have their own different mission and play distinct roles in the development of history. Thus, history is accomplished by both the masses and great persons few and simultaneously.
Admittedly, the role that the masses play in the great historic events and trends is quite important. None of great historic event is made by only few individuals; on the contrary, it is by the alliance of the majority that these events can be smoothly achieved. Although one ordinary person may have no outstanding courage and wisdom of few great persons, when a myriad of ordinary persons get together, the unified energy will be powerful and inexhaustible. This can help people to achieve many events that they dare not to want ever. In Independent War, if there are not support and participation of those who were eager to deserve liberty and democracy, it is impossible that American could win the independence at last. In fact, every common individual is like a drop of water. When a large number of drops are gathered, quantitative changes will give rise to qualitative changes, and in the end drops become a sea, which is possible the real reason why the powerful UK was defeated by Americans in that times. Thus, the majority' contribution on the significant historic events and trends can not be overlooked.
However, although the masses indeed play an essential role in history, it is impossible for them to make these historic events without the help of few great persons. A great figure is like a magnetic stone and closely adhere the populace together. A great figure is also like a kind of catalyst and fully motivates the masses' passion and energy. A great figure is like a twinkled star in dark sky as well and directs the masses to go forward in the correct direction. In history, we can see such a myriad of the great persons as Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, Gondi, Luth King, and so forth, all of whom, as spiritual leaders, orient and help people to create the significant historic events and trends by virtue of their remarkable wisdom and characters. Obviously, without the existence of the great person few, the historic events and trends will be difficult to be achieved by the masses.
Furthermore, it is due to the outstanding and striking characters of the great persons few that more data on them can be retained, which also makes historians more tend to focus on great persons few. On the one hand, due to the great number, the masses are hard to be recorded. And even if ordinary beings recorded their own some experiences, their accounts may seldom be focused on and thus disappear sooner or later. In contrast, the data of great persons few might remain more because of their unique charm that can always attract people attention on them. On the other hand, due to the excellent leadership of few great persons, the study on them can better learn of historic events and trends and disclose the truth of them.
In sum, the masses and few great persons both commonly achieve the historic events and trends through their respective role. Yet, due to the leadership of few great persons and more retained data on them, concentrating on great persons few may be more beneficial for us to study history.
