Argument26 The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.
"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."

The memo of the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda concludes that they should employ Mr. Schade to their school to promote the general music education program from the fact that in the past five years Mr. Charles Shade has brought great promotions to the Steel City High School (SCHS). The recommendation seems beneficial and reasonable at the first sight, but when weighing it in my mind carefully I find it problematic.

To begin with, the chairperson attributes the progress and the victories of the SCHS to the individual Mr. Schade entirely, which is terribly illogical and single-minded. Mr. Schade acts only as the music director of the school band at SCHS and the endeavors as well as the talent and average skills of the members of the band have been unreasonably overlooked. It is completely possible that Mr. Schade did little to promote the band or he is actually a poor music director, but because the band has enrolled a bunch of talent and skillful members they won the regional band competitions for three times. Or another possibility is that the performance of the school band of SCHS has not enhanced but that of their competitors declined in the past five years. Without persuasive evidence the chairman should not come to the conclusion.

Besides, the fact that the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at SCHS has improved remarkably over the past five years may not be the result that they have hired Mr. Schade but any other reasons. The chairperson fails to provide convincing evidence to bolster his assumption so the possibilities of any other reasons for the improvements cannot be excluded. For instance, the improvement of the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments may be the result that the headmaster of the school has paid more attention to the development of the school band and invested more money to improve the band while Mr. Schade made no contribution to it. If so, the memo's recommendation is ridiculous.

Moreover, given that Mr. Schade is really a skillful music director, the assumption that he can bring the same improvement to the school band in the town of Saluda can not hold water. The chairman make a poor analogy between these two schools since he concludes this illogically depending on the precondition that the situations between these two school are all most the same, but we are not informed from the information the memo gives us. Thus to give such an arbitrary conclusion is totally unreasonably.

In addition, we may suspect the argument that Mr. Schade can be successful to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system for the reason that in SCHS he is just a music director and whether he is capable to accomplish the missions the chairman of the Saluda school remains to be a question with unknown answer. So only if the chairman can substantiate his assumption can I hardly accept his recommendation.

In sum, that the memo recommends the school to hire Mr. Schade is unconvincing, lacking the evidences to prove the ability of Mr. Schade and the possibilities I listed above. So, to make his arguments more convincing, the chairperson should do more investigations before giving the conclusions.
