Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little." WORDS: 409 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-1-28 Concerning to the characteristic of an effective leader, different people may hold different opinions. The speaker said that the most important quality of an effective leader is the ability to keep consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and any one who is easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will achieve little. In my point of view, I strongly agree with the assertion of the author. The reasons that support my point will be listed as follows. To begin with, if we cast a look back to the history of the human society, any great leader in the world must have common features that are their definite ideas and unshakable standpoints. Those leaders always held their own specific opinions which were not easily opposed by others especially in some critic national events and international affairs. Deng Xiaoping, the chief stylist of the reform and opening-up in China, insisted his strong attitude in the Hong Kong's return to Chinese sovereignty in the negotiation with UK several years ago. It was his hardball on this event that led to the smooth return of Hong Kong in 1997. Besides, the USA government's unshakable and firm resolution in beating Japan during the Second World War in 1945 brought people over Asia peace soon after throwing the nuclear bombs. Such countless examples well-known to all the people in the world reflect that keeping consistent principles and objectives is the most essential quality of a good leader. In addition, as we know, many leaders who were always shakable and less strong-minded in the history were unsuccessful. Being influenced by others’ various opinions and views greatly, no one could make an effective and wise decision at last. For instance, the commander of the air force of the USA hesitated in "911" in 2001 on sending fighters to shot down the planes hijacked by terrorists although the president has already permit the action, and ultimately it caused the disappearance of the world trade centre and loss of thousands of lives. Such bloody lessons resulted from the unstable standpoint of leaders were not scarce in our memory. Thus, the ability to remain consistent objectives and point is really important for leaders. All in all, from what I mentioned and analysis above, we could be comfortable to arrive at the conclusion that the most essential and necessary quality of any effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Without it, he/she would be unserviceable and inefficient.
