Contemporary culture, generally speaking, does have much more relevance to our social life, which can lead the population alive currently to know better of the world precisely. However, it is the dispositions and views to deal with problems that are significant to a people living in the world. These dispositions, undoubtedly, are a certain effects of arts and literature or other culture of the past. Consequently, arts and literature of the past are at least as essential as, if not more than, contemporary culture in college and university study.

Just as an English teacher told me once, "As individuals, current culture tells us how to make a living, while past culture tells us how to live." It is reasonable. Arts and literature as a part of history, such as paintings of van Gogh, or the symphony of Beethoven, or the writings of Shakespeare, are telling us what happened in the past. The story of Massacre at Waterloo as well as the lifestyle of Socrates may affect student to form a claim of thoughts which immediate impact on everyone's whole life. Bacon said, "Histories make men wise." Read more and know more about how the world develops to today’s state usually make people get a further idea of who we are, as well as our personal aims, and what we are going to do.

Since the art works and literature link the future and the past, in some aspects they can help us foresee what will go on next. World is developing, and will change in the similar way. Therefore the antiques suggest how things end in the past time, at the same time imply how will things becoming. Sherlock Holmes, whom I show great respect for, had read a plenty of literatures about crimes in the belief that things, even crimes always repeat in the history. And, as we all know, it will be obtained from knowledge about the medium of the current time and the past time--artifacts such as arts and literature that remaining now.

When it comes to contemporary culture, it mostly means a culture which is popular, common considered at the time. Students at university should deal in great detail with the latest advances in contemporary culture to get ahead. Consider the science of computer: Students study it to get access to the outside world, to see, to hear, and also study it so as to make a living on the computer technology. But, it should draw our attention that, contemporary culture relating subjects such as computer science, gives us a way to understand the world today, while above all, the thought in our brain essentially changes the world, which is profoundly affected by the arts and literature in the past time.

These can serve as the main reasons that it is difficult to say contemporary culture has much greater relevance than the arts and literature of the past. Colleges and universities should not neglect anyone of the two types of cultures. Both need to study, to develop the up to date globe, at the same time to build a developing view of time, so that students can combine the two cultures into one well-rounded educated system of their own.
