TOPIC: ARGUMENT26 - The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.

"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."

In this argument, the arguer suggests to hire Mr. Charles Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. The suggestion is based on his contributions to Steel City High School. It is reasonable at the first glance, but it suffers from some critical fallacies.

In the first place, the arguer provides the evidence which lacks information to support his suggestion. Even though, we know that the school band of Steel City High School won three regional band competitions when Mr. Charles Schade is the music director, we can not simply attribute the honor to Mr. Charles Schade. There is not any information mentioned in the memo about the level of the regional band competition. And we don not know how the school band performed before Mr. Charles becoming the director as well. It is possible that the school band of Steel City High Saluda was at the high level before Mr. Charles Schade being the director.

In addition, the arguer fails take into account other factors leading the school band being the winner and the improvement of the rehearsal facilities and musical instruments. The economic factor is one of them. It is no doubt that the school in the developed community has strong economy support to music education. It is easier for them to change the old facilities and instruments into advanced ones. The residents in this community could pay more attention to their children's music education. They will hire private teachers to tutor their children after school. As the result, the students perform better at the competition.

Finally, even Mr. Charles Schade is an excellent director of the school board, it is hard to lead such conclusion that he can plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. The music director of a high school is totally different from the director of the general music education programs. The arguer should provide more evidence to prove that Mr. Charles Schade has the qualification to fit this career. As the director of the general music education in a districts’ school system, he should have the strong ability to handle more complex situations and be a active leader. He should have a clear view of the whole system. The arguer should provide more information to show that Mr. Charles Schade is more suitable to the position than any other person.

In summary, the suggestion lacks credibility. Before we accept the conclusion, the arguer must present more facts that Mr. Charles Schade is the best choice.
