Argument71 [天下无G]第6次作业

30min

In this argument, the arguer asserts that by using the new copper-extracting technologies can the amount of electricity consumed by the copper-extraction industry decline significantly. To justify his claim, the arguer provides the evidence that the new tech can save up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore. Admittedly, the arguer’s reasoning seems at the first glance to be free of charge for the new method can save the electricity resource used in the copper-extraction industry. However, after a carefully examination, the argument would reveal untenable due to the ignoring of the pragmatical side of the situation.

In the first place, the mere fact that the new technology can reduce the consuming of electricity lends scant support to the recommendation. In all likelihood, the method could be much expensive than the former that the cost of buying this appliance exceed the save from electricity. Thus, no company would like to buy this set of appliance. Also, the arguer fails to provide further evidence in the practice of the method. Maybe it will spend twice time than the former to process the same amount of raw ore. As efficiency is highly understood by the companies, it is unlikely that they would to any extend satisfied to the use of the new technology.

In addition, the arguer commits a fallacy to equal the benefits in the use of new tech in the ore of high copper to the whole copper-extracting industry. Given that the new tech will be welcomed by the ore with high proportion of copper, there is no evidence about the situation in low copper proportion ores. Probably the new method would counteract in these ores. That is to say, the use of the new tech in low copper proportion ores may maintain, even increase, the amount of electricity being used. As a result, we cannot expect the whole copper extracting industry would benefit significantly from the new technology.

To sum up, since the difficulties inherent in this process make it hard to predict whether the result will be a success or a failure, the conclusion that the whole copper extracting industry wills benefits greatly by the new technology is presumptuous. To make the author’s suggestion more convincing, we would need further information about the use of the new tech in low proportion ores and the cost for subsitute the former by the new method.
