TOPIC: ARGUMENT216 - The following appeared in a magazine article about planning for retirement.
"Because of its spectacular natural beauty and consistent climate, Clearview should be a top choice for anyone seeking a place to retire. As a bonus, housing costs in Clearview have fallen significantly during the past year, and real estate taxes remain lower than those in neighboring towns. Nevertheless, Clearview's mayor promises many new programs to improve schools, streets, and public services. Retirees in Clearview can also expect excellent health care as they grow older, since the number of physicians in the area is far greater than the national average."
Do Cleariview the best choice of the people who have retired, as the planning provides? At first glance, the planning seems to be reasonable. However, after careful scrutiny of the article, I find that the conclusion is not credible.
First of all, the author provides that the housing costs in Cleariview have fallen greatly last year. However, without the information of the cost in Cleariview compared to other places in the country, we do not know whether the costs are really beneficial. It is entire possible that the housing costs in Cleariview have been much higher than other places for a long time. Although they have fallen last year, the range between the costs is still significant. Additionally, if the costs in Cleariview really lower that other places during the past year, there is no evidence that the condition will retain in the future. After all, the information of the housing costs in Cleariview can not support the conclusion.
As to the promises the mayor of Cleariview made, there is no evidence that the promises will come to reality. Perhaps the mayor have not take these into the schedule of next decade, or even there are many other problems which should be solved immediately and he have no spirit to make out his promises. Even if the promises are to be attained recently, the schools and public services may do little to the people who have retired.
Furthermore, as to the health care, which is one of the most important services for the retired people, the information is not adequate. The number of physicians can not determine the quality of the health care. It is entirely possible that there is a medicine school in Cleariview, and the graduators affects the number of physicians, whose skill may not be well enough. And It is also possible that the situation of too many physicians in a place causes low efficiency of health care.
In addition, what attracts the people retired most is not the beautiful nature or the pleasant climate, but the circumstance of the place, such as people at similar age groups. They may want to talk to each other to get rid of solitude. The planning does not contain any information about the residents of Cleariview. It is entirely possible that Cleariview is a newly built city and almost all the citizens here are middle age. If so, the old people will feel lonely after they move to Cleariview, since it is difficult for them to find friends. Additionally, the article does not include any information about the public services made for ole peoples, such as some public parks or communities.
In sum, the author failed to support the conclusion by the evidence he provides. To strengthen the conclusion, he should provide more information about the housing costs and public services of Cleariview. And the quality of the health care should be provided as well.
