"Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."
Research is the exploration of the unknown for true answers to our questions, and for lasting solutions to our enduring problems. And it is also the chief means by which we humans attempt to satisfy our insatiable appetite for knowledge, and our craving to understand ourselves and the world around us. Therefore, it is necessary to invest on research for the greatness of human beings whether the results will be successful or not. But if the research will inevitably jeopardize the society, the investment in any forms will be illegal.
The controversy over a new range of scientific research happens every moment, because of the indispensable vast financial investment, which in other way can be devoted to the first imperative. Before China launched the great cause of sending the Shenzhou Ⅵ into space, it lead to fierce discussion about its necessity. Due to China is such a big country of big problems to deal with, such as aid money to mitigate the poverty and shorten the gap between the rich and the poor, many Chinese are not willing to allow the space agency to waste a mass of money into a launch of uncertain result. Nonetheless, witnessing the outstanding success of Shenzhou Ⅵ and it consequential influence over the whole world, hardly does someone still doubt about the value of investing a new potential research. In all, almost all the new research will definitely arouse the oppositions from people who are deeply rooted in traditional notion, and thus they need time to reverse to the new ones, sooner or later.
Moreover, it is the very time to define what is a good investment that deserves financial or labor investment. Firstly, a good investment should match up the concrete situation. That is to say, it does not overstep the capability but meet the needs of the society. Secondly, a good investment should be given to a trustful group of organizers and scientists, who will not use up the money while results in vain. Lastly, they require an appropriate and detailed plan to guide their research, which should follow the country’s basic principle and human morality and social ethic.
As to the last point of my definition, no deny that there are some research might endanger our lives and therefore call for precautious. The 911 troop of Japan, for instance, in the war towards China in 1930s, engaged largely in the bacterial experiment and biochemical weapon research. Besides, they experimented their research through vivisection on various age groups, from old to young, which is beyond the tolerance of Chinese and people in other country. Can one still insist that research deserve the investment?
To supervise the appropriation of national or private fund, the concerned government or institution should carefully and responsibly guide these investments with legislation and moral boundary. Only in this way, the funded research will match forward to the most beneficial target, at least not harm the ordinary life of people or cause great lost.
In sum, we should invest in research unremittingly for the profits it will bring, no matter the results will be controversial. However, the precious money or labor should be allocated to the proper place and right use. |
