As both the famous few and the forgotten majority may contribute a lot to significant events and trends, it isn’t proper to draw a conclusion that either side is more important than another without putting the roles into the context. And the study of these events should place emphasis on those who represent best for neither their essence but neither the famous few nor the forgotten majority.

The difference between the famous few and the forgotten group is that the former ones stand in the front line and the latter work behind the stage. It is entirely possible that it was the nameless ones that are more responsible to the events. An example of this is that in an relatively open and democratic country, the country’s significant decisions are passed not by a single person’s permission but that of a group of people’s – which called committee. The leaders of country or the principal of the committee might be famous, but they might only contribute scant to the final result of the events. A study on them may have little help for a better understanding of the whole event. Another famous case is the Water Gate Scandal. The case is so complicated and chronically. Related to national department range from the security to judiciary, the event involved a lot of peoples with different background. A study of only the famous ones such as President Nixon, his assistant the well-known adviser of White House John Dean for etc. is surely not enough to have a clear view of the events. The investigation must include the significant person and the groups that are possible to be involved but are long forgotten.

Seeing from a larger scale, a trend may be first aroused by few individuals. But it is the majority of unknown people who are leading the direction as it developed. The importance of their contribution still not relate to their fame or quantity. For example, the Asian Weekly Magazine along with 12 Chinese and oversea magazines have choose through public appraisal that “YOU” is the most influential person to the development of the internet on the year of 2006. But for the large numbers of nameless users, the internet won’t develop to be so popular. The famous invertors of the I.T. products may have provided the technology for the development of the network, but it is the interest, the application and the demand of the users that stimulated the growth of the internet. A emphasize on study of this crowd’s thoughts is required to grasp the reason for its development.


On the other had, when we look back to the history of those coercion regimes, the famous few are always those who define the aim of the movements and always take the initiative in leading the events. In these cases, the famous few are key persons whose thoughts may influence greatly to the result of the events. A well-known example of these is the Nazi movement in Germany, lightened and lead primarily by Hitler and carried out by thousands of soldiers and armies who were merely tools of Him. Similar examples can also be found throughout human history such as: the Qing Dynasty ruled by Qing Shi Huang with an autarchy regime in China, absolute monarchy in France during the Luis 14th, for etc. Thus, in these cases, a focused study on these nameless groups may have little value of getting the essence of the event. And the study should focus on individuals’ decision-makers.

To conclude, as the few famous individuals and the forgotten groups of people are playing different roles in different situations, it is hard to say that certain side is more important and worthy to be studied on. Whether to emphasize one or not depends greatly on the influence that was made.
