In this argument, the report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University recommends that Professor Thomas should receive a $10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson for fear that she defect to another school. To justify the recommendation, the argument points out that her classes are among the largest at the university. Also, it points out that she has brought much money to the university in research grants, which has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. However, careful scrutiny of the evidence in the argument would reveal that it lends no credible support to the recommendation.

First of all, the mere fact that her classes are among the largest at the university proves nothing that she is popular among students. It is entirely possible that because she is prone to giving high marks to her students, there are many students attending her class . Or perhaps, the discipline which she instructs is very popular among the university and the discipline is so practice that it will help students increase the opportunity to be hired in the future. Without ruling out these or other possible reasons, it is unfair to conclude that she is popular among students.

Secondly, the argument relies on the poor premise that the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Perhaps the last two years was an aberration, she even cannot bring any money to the research in other years. For that matter, perhaps many other professors attracted much more grant money than Thomas, relative to their salary. Without considering and eliminating these or other possible explanations, the conclusion is unjustifiable.

Finally, the argument relies on the assumption that without the increase salary and promotion, Professor Thomas would leave the university for another college. However, the argument provides no evidence that this is the case. In fact, it is entirely possible that the her recent salary has exceeded the the average salary level of a professor. Perhaps, she isn't willing to defect to another school. In short, lacking evidence that Professor Thomas would like to leave Elm City University and that other colleges will like to offer a higher salary for her, the argument cannot make any firm conclusion that it is necessary for the school authorities to raise her salary and to offer her a promotion.
