TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 606 TIME: 0:45:41 DATE: 2007-3-2
History, unlike the author asserts that study upon which has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives, actually plays a vital role in helping us to find a proper way of doing nearly everything. To better illustrate my viewpoint, let me discuss in the following details.
History is just like a mirror. They can reflect the experience of previous events, which help us avoid repeating the same mistakes in the past. These experience is especially valuable for administers. For example, the study on the unprecedented Chernobyl nuclear events, which may be the worst environments pollution disaster in human history, has summarized the enormous holes in the controlling regulations in the nuclear power station which provoked the tragedy. Considering the pernicious aftereffect, governments around the world has immediately applied these amendments of such holes their nuclear power stations. In such cases, the study has prevented the tragedy from occurring once more, at least to a certain extent. We human always make progress at the cost of mistakes, therefore if we overlook the significance of studying on the reasons and experience of the past failures, not only these errors become meaningless, but the same mistakes may always keep with us.
Also, study on the history can provide us with successful experience which may be various from every field of lives, both to individual and groups. Clausewitz and his 'On The Theory Of War', which was adored by the latter generations, is nowadays learnt not only by people limited with the circle of armies, but by the ordinary people, who might be merchants, students or sport players. Obviously the army studies the strategies mentioned in the book for wining battles during the war, while for the common people, they consider those war theory the same as the survival theory. To eliminate the enemies on the field of battle may be nearly the same as to defeat the rivals in the real life, so the theories and strategies in the war book will still be useful when they were applied by those common people. Even more, governments also are practicing the precious experience. Thorough wise and careful strategy summrized in the book, governments in the international conferences can play a more prominent role so that they can gain higher positions. Learning those wining strategies which prevailed in the history may cultivate you with the experiences of the brilliant ancestors, so you can be in advance while others have to conclude such skills or abilities by themselves at the cost of mistakes unless they follow the pace of their ancestors.
Admittedly, study of history related to daily lives actually has its meaning; however, compared with the forgoing two reasons, the meaning may oftentimes seem trivial. Those studies always were taken to meet the curiosity of the public. For example, the study of the customs of an ancient mayterious race, may inspire greatly the sales of a certain medium. Then the study has added enjoyment to the people's daily lives. Nevertheless, it is not difficult to imagine that, when a country is in turmoil, or has been invaded or even occupied by the foreigners, such long time curiosity of a nation history can arouse the national awareness and proud which are especially useful in uniting the whole nation, just as it did in France in the 1940s, when it has been governed by the Nazi Germany. Under such circumstances, the study on daily-based history can be essential for the fortunate of a nation, if proper guide can be given to the public rather than the pure enjoyments.
In summary, the author 's conclusion is astonishing. |
