TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

This argument takes the clods as the cause of absenteeism in schools and workplaces as granted and makes an unconvincing deduction that daily use of lchthaid could prevent colds and lower absenteeism. Actually, there are several flaws in this argument and I will illustrate them in the following paragraphs.

Firstly, the arguer fails to convince us that colds are the most frequent reason for absences from school and work. As we all know, in university many students are absent for class because they wake up too late rather than they get cold. In addition, the arguer does not provide information about the weather about West Meria and maybe frequent harsh weather such as rainstorm results in the absenteeism from school and work. Moreover, absences from work mostly depend on what kind of work people engage. For example, people working in big busness company for distribution may be absent from work because sometimes they fight to another city to cooperate with his or her associate but the return flight is delayed.

Secondly, the premise of this argument that lchthaid could prevent colds is soundless. The only example in this argument to support this point is that the results of the study reports. People in East Meria visit doctor only once or twice per year possibly because people in there are in very well health condition and they hardly visit doctor. Moreover, maybe people in East Meria tend to visit doctor only when they have some other health problems such as toothache rather than colds since colds are considered as the most common healthy problems and they can cure them at home by themselves.

Finally, even if we concede that colds are the most frequent reason for absences from school and work and daily use of lchthaid could help people to prevent from colds, we cannot say that in West Meria this procedure would success just like that in East Meria. The natural environments for East Meria and West Meria are different and people are in different health thus it is doubtful that lchthaid could prevent people from colds. It is entirely possible that people in West Meria may be anaphylactoid to fish proteins and apparently the use of lchthaid for them can lead more absences from school and work since they have to visit doctor.

In sum, to convince me the conclusion of the argument, the arguer should provide the substantial relationship between the colds and the reason of absences from school and work. Also the arguer should supply the evidences that the daily use of lchthaid does prevent colds.
