"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
Is it the artist rather than the critic that gives society something of lasting value, as the speakers(speaker) contends? Artists serve as the successors(为什么artist是继承者?或者说为什么别人不是) and creators of cultures in representing the real beauty, (maintaining social order, promoting the moral value, 这两个作用也有么?)or at least subserving the great cause of ultimate happiness and eternal fame, while the critics perform as catalyzer and filter to excavate the intelligent artists (发掘的对象不是artist,而因该是“价值”或是“作品”)and griddle out the inept ones, both of which consequently render the potential lasting value towards the society by their consumers’ visual and acoustical consumption. While(这里为什么要用while,通常while引导上半句的时候,下半句应该表转折吧) it might be tempting to incline to the author's assertion that the artists are of far-reaching influence than that of the critics, as far as I can see(as far as I concerned).
As for the artists, their ultimate aim of creating their art works is to reflect the reality in which they instill their personal interests, emotions, and values, or even those of the whole society, and thus they wish their works possess the value to be judged and evaluated by their posterity, the longer the better. Some artists’ works, for instance, well documented the historic events to originally represent the past incidents to their following readers, which are capable of preserving the history for a long time. Marseillaise, the national anthem of France, well sustains(sustained) the rising spirit in French Revolution; The Star-Spangled Banner, known as the song of America, reflects bravely fighting back of(没看懂fight back of 是什么意思) the American Revolution; the national anthem of Japan reveals the strong sense of militarism.(看似举了三个例子,其实都是国歌鼓舞人民,感觉可能还不如一个) All of these songs are of lasting influence on the citizens respectively, because they cherish the national essence as historic meaning through the hands of the artists.
From another aspect to consider the art works, we can catch that the themes of them impress the contemporary, or even their offspring virtually beyond the intention of the creators. The Francis Bacon's individual thought on study at ease inherited from generation to generation as motto. “Study serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability”,"Histories make men wise; poets witty, the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grace; logic and rhetoric able to contend” shed lights to many readers hitherto as immortal truth. Besides, movies recording the “social catastrophes” about the tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, air crashes, ship wrecks, autobile collisions family violence, sex abuse, drug and alcohol addiction continually warn and teach lessons(teach lessons好像有点。。也可以用educate, remind sb of) to the followers for its significant importance for long-term human survival.
Moreover, when comparing to the critics, the artists are the real creators of a culture and thus perform as the platform for criticism. In reality, the reputation and reverence of artists in readers’ heart are more significant and meaningful. Moreover, the critics merely adopt their own limited(这里limited好像是一个比较重的词,有inferior的意思,要照顾到后面还有一段写批评家的好处,所以不应该过贬) view and criterion to estimate the value of the artists, which may render the artists a bandage to form their distinctive personalities. Thus, it is unsurprising to find that those who the readers cherish most are always the artists instead of their judges.
Admittedly, critics, the connoisseurs of artists(鉴赏家是鉴赏作品的), with their profound knowledge of aesthetics and a taste in art, could offer valuable advice to artists and extend their popularity to more people in a(an) age of information bombardment They are the advertisement channel to make the artists assess(accessible) to the masses much easier and directly.
Generally speaking, I agree with the author insofar as the importance of the artists in promoting the lasting value to the society in most of the cases.(这句总结句中"in most of the cases"有点画蛇添足,反而觉得没写完) |
