TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be
required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

It is presumptuous to claim that all faculty at college and university should be required to spend time working outside the
academic world. Whether the faculty at college and university should spend time working relevant to the courses they teach
is strongly related to the pacific academic area.
For those whose majors are related with real society, faculty members should be encouraged to work outside to obtain some
experiences. The reasons for this viewpoint can be illustrated as follows.
First, the knowledge learned in these subjects needs to be used in society, so the instruction with daily experiences can
rouse the interest of students. It can help the students learn the knowledge more easily and forwardly. They can bring to
their students practical, real-world examples of principles and theories discussed in textbooks. While, students are tired
with the teaching without daily experiences. For example, one of my friends, whose major is electronic engineering, told me
that most faculties and graduate students had experiences outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses
they taught and learned. They can face difficulties which they won't meet at their academic area. The new problems they found
in industrial domain could help them with their research and teaching. The research ability of faculty and student may also
help industry field solve difficulties since they look these problems from different sides.
Second, students prefer the teachers with rich relevant working experience, for they can know the real situation outside the
campus and learn how to apply their techniques in future. Sometime, they could also learn how to communicate with colleagues
at company from their teachers.
Moreover, an important goal of college and university education is to bring up excellent workers to satisfy various needs
from the society. To meet this intention, university education must teach students how to apply their knowledge in real
society. Students could learn this skill with various measures. One of the most direct methods is the teachers who have real
experiences at related domains instruct it.
Another benefit has to do with the employment problem with the students. If teachers at universities often tie up companies,
they can easily found what kind of people the society needs, so students could improve their ability according to the
requirement.
For those, whose major do not have any relationship with the real world such as mathematics and history, it is not necessary
for them to work outside the academic. The working outside the academic will do little help to their academic ability and may
impact the teaching and research at college or university.
In sum, we should encourage the faculty whose professional work related to society to work outside in order to better orient
instruction to student for future career and research for themselves.
