Having fully embraced the contention that artists, rather than critics give society something of lasting value, the author overlook and underestimate some indispensable characteristics of the critics. And I argue that critics also play contributing role in endowing arts with lasting value.

To begin with, we should define what lasting value is and who decide it. review the history, most of the works of arts, which are regard as of lasting value, are those standing against the time and permanently arise people's emotions, though some times some people may denigrate their greatness. An a important characteristics of these works is that dissimilar people in different times often view them with different eyes, and they may come out with different feelings and critiques to the same works. An old saying reads: "There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes." And different views we have to Hamlet, all these views perpetuate Hamlet in our minds.

A famous critic named Roland Barthes elucidated in his <The Dead of the Author> that it is not the original meaning endowed by the author that most important, but rather the immense meaning created by the readers, the critics as well as the author. The critics of art, based on these interpretations, have two major functions-the first is to clarify some profound meaning of a work, such as the author's motive and emotion, the second is to endue the work with elements other than the author does.

The first function, which acts as a chain between the artist and the mere mortals, can help spread the influence of works of art. In that art is a kind of abstract creation that not only deriving from lives but also transcending above lives to many people. And critics who have abundant training and experience can help people understand the underlying principle beyond the surface phenomenon of a work. With their effort, for instance, people nowadays could enjoy the <Odyssey> without confusion about the era backgrounds far away from them. On the other hand, critics also reflect some beneficial points to help the author improve his/her works.

The second function, which could be viewed as the creations of the critics, sometimes significantly extends the meaning of a work. A familiar example to us is <Mona Lisa>, one of the greatest work of Da Vinci. Hundreds of years, the subtle smile upon Mona Lisa's face arrests immense critics and audiences to decipher. Although some of these critiques are absurd and buried to oblivion by passing times, others, which are bound up with philosophy, theology, psychology, sociology and even mathematics， portray discrepant viewpoints to this painting as well as endow it with immense connotations far more than the author did. And we can foresee that there will be other critics come out in the future, which would undoubtedly perpetuate this sparkling painting as well as the implicit smile.

To sum up, lasting value comes from not only the artists but also the critics-they endue two wings to the work and make it soar through the time.

文章的整体结构很清晰，开头和结尾都写的不错，Odyssey和Mona Lisa的例子也切题，但我觉得有以下的问题值得商榷。
1.虽然定义lasting value显得比较有意义，但是它和后面几段的联系似乎不够紧密。如果只定义有lasting value的作品是those standing against the time and permanently arise people's emotions，而在后面对此定义不加利用并强调critics创造了此种value，那么这个定义对文章又有什么作用呢？
2.如kito9695 所分析，可将人们分为三类：artists, critics and normal people，如果能将critics和normal people 详细区分并强调critics帮助了normal people对作品的理解，是不是更好？
3.文章中出现了一些小的语法问题，不知是否因为写的太快而有所疏忽
比如the author overlook and underestimate ，动词应该加s
review the history, most of the works of arts。。。是否应将review改为reviewing？
还有，英文里面也有书名号吗？
