TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent
study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well
established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in
iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the
correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat
and heart disease.

In the argument , the arguer tries to convince us that not only we can conclude the correalation between high iron levels and heart disease, but also there is most probably a function of correlation between red meat and heart disease. To substantiate the argument ,the arguer  provides the evidence that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disezse, while the well-established link between red meat and heart disease . However, as it stands , the argument suffers from several critical fallacies , which might seriously undermine the analysis.

To begin with, the evidence provided in the argument is insufficient to validate the analysis. What we have to point out is that, without any further details about the procedures of random sampling and excluding other possible factors, we are not sure whether "the recent survey" is representative enough to reflect the correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and the risk of heart disease for all the people.

Secondly, given that the well established link mentioned in the argument is  between large amounts of red meat in the diet and the heart disease, what we want to emphasize is that , the large amounts of red meat in the diet do not simply equals to eating the red meat. Significantly, according to the large amounts of red meat , it is possible to increase the risk of heart disease by the interaction of large amounts of red meat and other food. Accordingly, we can not easily commit the fallacy of hasty generalization just like the arguer.

Finally, without taking other factors  into account, the arguer misleadingly makes the conclusion that the link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and disease is due to the high in iron of red meat, considering that it might be a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet.Perhaps, some characters in the read meat will definitely influence the
risk of heart disease, which might be even more seriously than the high in iron.

To sum up, the argument lacks credibility because the evidences provided in the argument do not  substantially support what the arguer claims. To enhance the argument , the arguer should provide more evidence that  the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease is definitely the  function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease , especially excluding other factors. To better evaluate the argument , we need more information regarding  the recent study quoted in the article in last month's issue of Eating for Health.
