TOPIC: ISSUE57 - "The depth of knowledge to be gained from books is much richer and broader than what can be learned from direct experience."
WORDS: 495 TIME: 0:39:01 DATE: 2007-3-11
There is no denying that books are the primary sources of knowledge since they came to the world. However, simply assert that books are superior to the direct experience in the knowledge gaining process seems a little presumptuous. Direct experience does play an indispensable role in broadening our horizon.
Admittedly, books, which are the summarization of the direct experience, actually are better at teaching us knowledge, for they are the concentration of the former generation's hardworking. For instance, the regulation of the movement of the planets in the solar system has been observed by Tycho and summarized by Kepler, and the whole research event costs about 20 years. Maybe nowadays astrologists can find the regulation in less than 20 years due to the development of the equipments, but obviously it is much wiser to refer to the books on which are recorded such information. If we blindly repeat the time and energy consuming process of experience regardless of the previous records of experience--that is books, it is a waste of time and money, and we will achieve half accomplishments with double effort.(第一段很清楚,不过最后一句,英文里真的有嘛呵呵)
However, that does not equal to that we should learn everything just from books.(个人觉得用can是不是更合语境) A threshold problem is that without the basic experience, we usually fail to profoundly understand the information contained in the books, or even cannot realize the significance of it. Those books are the concentration of the thoughts and understanding of the former experience learners, and they established their system of theory in the books after thousands times of experiences and rethink, which is a process of accumulation and progress. If we overlook the meaning of such preparing process, we are inevitably puzzled when we confront with such abstract books, just as it did in some soldiers who have just join the army when they try to read 'On the Theory of War' written by Clausewitz. Therefore, reading without practicing first may also weaken the effects of the knowledge gaining process.(我觉得这一段你没写完,要是我会接着写通过实验/实践帮助理解知识,你这里的PREPARE感觉太模糊了)
Moreover, when we concern the ultimate goal of gaining knowledge, we will realize that we are willing to utilize the knowledge we gain from either books or from experience into practice. That is to say, our knowledge is at last seriously limited or even useless unless we put it into practice after learning, not to say rich and broad. In such sense, the experience is essential for the real understanding and use of knowledge. It is impossible for Zidane to become the worldwide star if he only studies hard on what the theory books of football without practicing on the playground. Merely in the cage of the abstract and theory, the knowledge can only produce bookworms but never serve for us.
In summary, books and experience are incompatible. Before we read books we should practice to certain extent first; and after learning the materials on books, we should again put them into the real world--that is to experience. In such cases, the knowledge is really fully utilized by us.
