Issue 41   The role of nonmainstream areas of inquiry in society.

      The nonmainstream subjects like astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits real solve some questions and satisfy people's particular desire. However, such nonmainstream can hardly play a vital role in society or even sometimes be harmful.

      From the origin of the nonmainstream areas, we can get some valuable information of the function of nonmainstream. In ancient era, people did not have much construction of knowledge about the world and some phenomenon, such as why people will die, can't be explained. In order to meet people's desire and need, the areas like astrology and fortune-telling were developed by ancient people. At that era, such areas even become the dominant field of knowledge and play a very important role in maintaining the stability of society and development of the culture. However, with the development of the civilization, with the help of technology, more and more phenomenon get their accurate explanations that are widely accepted. As a result, the former dominant areas gradually become the nonmainstream areas. And currently, when people feel remorse, regret, and guilt, they can get consolation from these areas.

      However, such nonmainstream areas often become the obstacle for people to fetch the rational, logical and real knowledge. When the ideas and concepts of the nonmainstream areas play and dominant role in people's mind, they will lose the motivation to seek for the real fact and even be exclude the new accurate ideas. The case of Galileo stands as an undisputed confirmation. Galileo, who was an unshaken supporter of Copernican system and verified his theory through a great many of facts, was later tried by Inquisition and forced to recant because his theory betray the doctrines of the Catholic church. And with the support of the scientists after him, in the year 1986 the Vatican had to admit that the judgment more than 360 years ago is invalid. From the case, we can see that without the work of the scientists after him, such valuable theory may never come to the us any longer because of the block of nonmainstream areas.

    Someone would argue that with a long period development, the nonmainstream areas also have their perfect construction of concepts and can even explain some problems that modern technology can't give an explicit explanation. In their opinion, the nonmainstream areas should get equal attention to the mainstream areas. However, they overlook that the root of the areas are often the experience of particular people or imposed relation between independent things. Such groundless theory will conceal the real truth, which can do the respectable impact as the arguer describes. With the misled explanation of the areas, people will get a false ideas and concept and become vulnerable to self-deception, false hopes, fantastic ideas and even delusion that will hurt themselves. Consequently, we are unwilling to see that something like holy wars, suicide-bomb, genocide we make a huge devastation to our society and culture.

    In sum, although astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits respond to certain basic human needs, the potential harm they can inflict on their participants and on society far outweighs their psychological benefits. And we should not be misled and seek the konwledge though the rational and logical way.
