The speaker asserts that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. It might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that in a few respects television, including video, can be a more efficient and effective way of learning for its living images. However, in most respects, the new technique serves poor to take place books for learning.

The implicit rationale behind the speaker's statement seems to be that television holds certain advantages over books in several kinds of information. To document and convey temporal, spatial events and experiences, television and video provides a more useful and effective way than book. For instance, for anyone, no matter how impressing or familiar with the events, to recount in complete and objective detail such events as a flare in the progress in chemistry. Additionally, since the world is becoming an increasing eventful place, with each day it becomes a more onerous task for journalists, authors and book publishers to recount these events, and disseminate them in print form. Producers of televised broadcast and videos have an inherent advantage to achieve this task and would get a much better effect.

On the other hand, there are several compelling arguments that television cannot supplant book as the main means people get knowledge. One such argument is that television, including videos, which needs a lot of additional conditions, is inherent less convenience for individuals to learn anywhere than book. These conditions include electricity, batteries, signals and well as enough space for the device. So it is difficult or even impossible for people learn from them in some particular place such as when people travel around the world, or have a recreational time on the sea side. One the other hand, however, these troubles do not exist when referring to books. Considering this disadvantage, television could not give to people as much knowledge as book and thus never can replace book for learning new skills.

A second argument against the speaker's position has to do with the whether it can meet different individuals' needs and can be repeated. Programs in the television, to draw as many audiences as possible, are often decided to be the most popular issues, which majority of people concerns about; yet these information may lend little support to individuals who want to achieve knowledge. Besides, as interest is different from people, it is impossible for the public medium to satisfy all of them. Secondly, though the programs are sometimes rebroadcast, however, unfortunately it can be decided by any one who needs to review them. By contraries, when reading books, people can review it whenever they do not quite understand or want to get a profound impression of significant events.

In sum, although the advantage in new way of learning knowledge is observable, the tradition means by which people mainly get their knowledge is also important. Moreover, the inherent advantages of reading books-providing more abstract information, including kinds of ideas of critics that would help to understand new knowledge, for example-ensure it living forever.
