TOPIC: ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

No 174

The author recommends that keeping the college all-female will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially. At first glance, the author’s recommendation appears to be somehow appealing. However, as discuss below, the author suffers from several critical flaws and therefore is unpersuasive.

To begin with, the result of the survey that about eighty percent of the students wanted the school to remain all female lacks credibility. The assumption that most of the students want the school to keep all female is open to doubt. How many students take part in the survey? Perhaps only a few students take part in the survey. So the statistic is too simple to make any judgment. Or perhaps most of the students who join the survey have boyfriends now. So they are indifferent to this problem. May be many single girls will hope the collage admit men into its programs because they want to have a romantic memory during the collage lives. Without eliminating these possibilities, we cannot rely on the survey to conclude that more students wish to preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education.

In addiction, the mere fact that over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation is insufficient to draw any general conclusion that most alumni want to keep the century-old tradition. The same question could be asked again: how many alumni take part in the survey? Perhaps just few alumni answered the survey. And the idea cannot inflect all alumni. Or may be most of the alumni who join the survey are very old. Common sense and experience tell us that frequently old people are conservatism and they always want to keep the old tradition. May be some young alumni wants to change the tradition and hope the collage admits men into its programs. Besides, there can be various alternative explains to this fact. Without providing more clear evidence, the author cannot convince me the assumption.

Last but not the least, even most of the students and alumni want to keep its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs, the author fails to establish a casual relationship between the survey and morale among students. There is no evidence to indicate that all-female education is very useful and effective. Even many alumni want to remain the old tradition. We could not conclude that they will donate money. Or perhaps the alumni who support the old tradition do not have a large amount of money. The alumni who become very rich do not want to remain the old tradition.

In conclusion, the author fails to adequately support the recommendation that Grove College will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the collage financially by keeping the college all-female. To strengthen the argument, the author should provide more evidence that most of the students and alumni really want to keep the old tradition. To assess the argument, I would need more information between the tradition and morale among students.

呵呵

(前面两句感觉都像主旨句,有点重复啊)How many students take part in the survey? Perhaps only a few students take part in the survey.(可以些学校有多少人?3000参加的有多少人?100So the statistic is too simple to make any judgment. Or perhaps most of the students who join the survey have boyfriends now. So they are indifferent to this problem(感觉这个理由不是很好啊). May be many single girls will hope the collage admit men into its programs because they want to have a romantic memory during the collage lives. Without eliminating these possibilities, we cannot rely on the survey to conclude that more students wish to preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education. 逻辑顺序不是很条理

谢谢热心的Prudence
