65. The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that all of their stores should discontinue stocking imported cheese and concentrate mainly on domestic cheeses in order to improve profits. To substantial the conclusion, the arguer points out that the best-selling cheeses at their newest store were domestic cheeses from Wisconsin. In addition, he also shows a survey by Chesses of the World magazine, which indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. A careful examination of this argument would reveal how groundless it is.

First of all, instead of the information to show whether the best-selling ones at other stores are also the domestic cheeses, the arguer only takes the newest stores into account. However, the chain is composed of all the stores. The situation of the newest one can not represent the whole, for the sales volume involves many aspects, such as location. Maybe the taste of cheeses from Wisconsin extraordinarily appeals to the local people, but things may not be the same in other places.

Secondly, best-selling doesn't equal to high profits. Sometimes, the manufacturer may sacrifice the high profits to the large proportion of the market. However, some cheeses with high price and low sale may bring more profits because of the cost of products maybe much more lower than the prices. Obviously, the merchant can earn more with low reserves and high margin. If so, the high sales volume will make no sense

Finally, the survey that the arguer mentioned seems to be not so credible and reliable because of the limited information the magazine provide,  for the arguer doesn't refer to the number of the respondents and all the respondents are their subscribers. Moreover, there is no comparison between the domestic and imported ones. The increasing preference for domestic cheeses doesn't mean they are not interested in the imported ones. Lacking such evidence the author cannot draw any firm conclusion based on the survey.

In summary, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more convincing, the arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning the best-selling at all the stores and the margin of the domestic cheeses. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information regarding credibility and the comparison of survey.
