There is much controversy over the issue: which way is more effective in communication, images or language? Some people claim that it is much easier to understand an idea by vision than by abstract language, while the others advocate that language can express an idea more accurately than images. On balance, I would argue that the two measures are not incompatible, so the most effective way to adress an idea or value is the combination of images and language.
We must admit that on some occasions images indeed can express the ideas or value directly and quickly. When a person just comes back from a long trip that spans the continent, he must have a lot interesting things to share with his friends, the passing scene outside the train windows, the flatlands and valleys, the mountains and rolling hillsides, the city skylines and village halls. However, it is impossible for him to describe the beautiful landscape accurately only by language. Even if he utilizes many attracting or charming words, his friends can understand his feelings but can not appreciate the same beautiful picture as him. If he also takes a lot of pictures of the landscape by his camera, what he need to do is showing these pictures to his friends, even not invloving any words to describe them. This example can well present the effectiveness of images when people want to pass impression to others.

Emphasis on the effectiveness of images on some special occasions does not imply that the language is not important in communication. When it comes to some ideological ideas or values ,or to the necessity to attain further understanding, language is indesipensible. Sigmund Freud, the famous German psychiatrist, said “words have imagical power. They can bring either the greatest happiness or deepest despair; can transfer knowledge from teacher to students; Words enable the orator to sway his audience ant dicate its decisions; Words are capable of arousing the strongest emotions and prompting all man’s actions.” Language does have unimaginable power to arouse people’s strongest emotions and persuade people to take actions. If the tourist mentioned above wants to persuade his friends to take the same trip as him, his friends may hesitate to make a decision after only viewing these pictures of fascinating landscape. However, his friends will make a determination to have the trip with the following convincing words which describe the convience transportation, cheap hotels, interesting custom and so on. Therefore, language is indispensible.
Images and language are not existing in different worlds, which are compatible with each other. Combining the two ways to communicate with a group of people will turn out to be the most effective way. Take myself as an example, in English class our teacher required me to introduce my major to the whole class. What I study is pharmacology which is very abstract. I can not explain the complex stucture of DNA clearly, so I illustrate the double-helix structure with a vivid picture. At last, everybody can understand me very well. We are not living in a world which only has images or language, instead we are living in such a world where many beautiful images and euphonious sounds. What we need to do not conduct a scission but a combination to contribute to our communication.
