Issue2     "Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society."


I agree with the speaker that competition is more beneficial than detrimental to society ultimately, but we must place a precondition on it, that is keep the competition is fair and legally.

Competition among individuals derive from the human instinct of survival, now a days, it can make a person more adaptive to the society. In animal world, competition is in everywhere, an antelope need run faster than others so that can escape from lion’s claws; A lion also need run faster and become more powerful than others so that can catch prays and assure can eat the prays finally. It just likes Darwin’s origin of species. In his theory of natural selection, he believes that species adapt to their environment in order to survive, there must be a competition in period of adapting, only the creature who adapt to the environment most fleetly and adaptively will not be eliminated but survive. In human society, also exist the competition like that, but transmute physical and body into mind and knowledge. No one willing to live a needy life, so every one need enter a school when they are young, from that time, the competition between you and others is begin and last until the end of your life. We need find our defects and fix it permanently to improve ourselves, and when we get success some day, it means you win the competition, however, it is not means you can have a rest but the start of new competition. We improve ourselves, and adapt to society step by step in competition, the society also get development in the same time.

Let’s amplify the individual competition, the competition among groups or organizations can make a group or organization more powerful so that it can make more contribution for society. Like individual person, an organization or group also need take competition with others if it want to survive in society. A s an illustration, in economy, competition has a great influence to a company or group, each company should try its best adapt to competition, that means they need provide products or services with high quality to customers at low prices, the lowest prices with high quality products can help a company occupy market and earn more profit. For society, better services and high quality products can enable people live a better and high quality life, it also can stimulate the technical improvement and economic development. In order to see this point clearly, another case in point is that in politic aspect, competition among different politic parties can make these parties offer a better public service, improve policy and do more things for society, this is helpful to accelerate the process of democratic.

However, not all the competition can propels society development. Competition benefits society must depend on fair and legally condition, unfair and illegally competition will surely do harm to the society. For example, Microsoft Company was prosecuted for monopolization. The act of Microsoft impedes the law of market and suppress other software companies’ development, it will interfere with the software technical improvement and affect market prosperity, moreover, deprive customers of option right. Obviously, whether competition is fair or legally, decided by whether its effect to society beneficial or harmful.

In summary, competition system is very important to the development of society, but we must pay more attention to keep it fair and legally for it can exerts a positive function to society.
