TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

Combining the preference of consumers with the recent practice of the manufacturer, the author thus provides a conclusion that the sales of Whirlwind would definitely increase in a seemingly reasonable way. However, the failure to consider the effectiveness of the survey and other alternative factors actually alleviate the persuasively of the conclusion.

To begin with, the author might intensively conceal the backgrounds of the practical survey. Firstly, the number of interviewees could not be overlooked. As is self-evident, the survey is useful only when it manage to deputize general will of consumers. Though the author might confidently belief that the survey has included enough prospective patronizes, it is reasonable for readers to suspect the quantity of the examples. Secondly, the age of interviewees should be considered before launching an advertising campaign. Even if the survey has a significantly large examples pool, it might fail to convince readers when it provides no information about the age of interviewees. Actually, if those who prefer to lifelike graphics are mainly people 35 to 60 years old, the extensive advertisement concentrating to youngsters might works little. Besides, neither have the gender and educational or other sort of differences been told. Since every game has its particular customers group, the author should have promise more details about the survey.

What is more, it is still open question that whether the advertising campaign would work. Admittedly, advertisement have great potential to steer audience's will of purchasing goods, as is demonstrated in numerous sums of commercial practices. However, commercial practices as well indicate that the sales of products would ultimately determined by the quality of them. Hence, the advertising campaign, extensive and profound as it might be, does not necessarily suggest the success in sales. If playing Whirlwind's video games is virtually a boring task that consumes not only a cherished Sunday afternoon, but also the player’s tolerance, there is no light on the increase of sales. In that case, the fame appears to be an evil rather than benefit, for the more people know them, the more people know their bore.

In addition, the market condition has been undeserved slipped. Is there still balance in the market of lifelike graphic video-game for Whirlwind? Is the competition so heated that Whirlwind is not likely even to survive in the market? Whirlwind might be able to design fascinating games as well as it is able to launch broad publicizing, yet the author provides no evidence to indicate that it is still able to transcend other rivals. As the result, asserting a visible soar of profit turn to be arbitrary.

Therefore, there exists large amount of work to be completed by Whirlwind, an aggressive manufacturer of video games, before to forecast a reversal. Both of the organization of a survey providing more details and information and the advanced research of marketing condition are desirable, as well as the development of quality.
