ARGUMENT203- The following appeared in a newspaper feature story.

"Atthe small, nonprofit hospital in the town of Saluda, the average length of a patient's stay is two days; at the large, for-profithospital in the nearby city of Megaville, the average patient stay is six days. Also, the cure rate among patients in theSaluda hospital is about twice that of theMegaville hospital. The Saluda hospital hasmore employees per patient than the hospital in Megaville, and there are fewcomplaints about service at the local hospital. Such data indicate thattreatment in smaller, nonprofit hospitals is more economical and of betterquality than treatment in larger, for-profit hospitals."

Basedon an unwarranted comparison between a non-profit hospital in the town ofSaluda and a for-profit hospital in the nearby city of Megaville, the author ofthis argument concludes that treatment in smaller, nonprofit hospitals is moreeconomical and of better quality than that of larger, for-profit hospitals.Clear scrutiny of his or her inference reveals that it suffers from manyillogical fallacies and thus is unconvincing.

Athreshold problem with this argument is that the mere fact that patients tendto stay longer in for-profit than non-profit hospital does not necessarily meanthat the former is inferior to the later. It is entirely possible that medicalfacilities in this non-profit hospital were always in a short condition thatpatients, not fully recovered, would have no choice but to return home forfurther treatment.

Anotherflaw that weakens the argument is that the fact that the cure rate amongpatients in non-profit hospital is about one time higher than that offor-profit hospital does not simply imply that the former is of better qualitythan the former. Perhaps patients in non-profit hospital are always less hurtthan those of for-profit hospital. If that were the case, then it might seem tobe no surprise as to the higher cure rate in non-profit hospital.

Finally, the fact that non-profit hospital has more employees per patient thanfor-profit hospital might add little to the arguer's conclusion. There is alarge possibility that except a few qualified doctors in non-profit hospital, the rest of its employees are all intern students from nearby medical collegeswhile all of employee at for-profit hospital are all sophisticated workers withmany years of experience. Consequently, due to lack of enough practicalexperience, these students might not serve patients well as other sophisticateddoctors in for-profit hospital.

Ina word, the arguer's inference is unreasonable as it stands. He or she hasoverlooked or chosen to ignore many aspects of his or her conclusion. Tofurther substantiate it, more evidence should be provided to eliminate theabove-mentioned possibilities regarding their facilities, faculties and soforth.

It is entirely possible that medicalfacilities in this non-profit hospital were always in a short condition thatpatients, not fully recovered, would have no choice but to return home forfurther treatment.(你这攻击的是论据,展开了第一句,就接着possible一下就没了?
