TOPIC: ISSUE74 - "The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language."

1. 图象确实是有效的方式
2. 语言也是有效的方式
3. 两者结合才最有效
What is the most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people? The speaker claims that the answer is using images instead of language. But I maintain that using both images and language is the best way.
I concede that using images is a very effective way to convey ideas for the reason that the ideas in form of images are direct to the public. In most cases, people are more likely to be touched by images, such as photos and pictures. For instance, no matter how well the language is organized, people may more easily be shocked by the images of poor kids in Africa. The bony body and the desperate eyes of them, which cannot be explained in language well, both shock our hearts heavily. Without those images, most of people might never be able to imagine the miserable life of them. Although there might be no explanation of the pictures, they easily shows that people there need help since the pictures themselves have given a great impression on people. Therefore, in some cases, images might be a very effective way to communicate idea or value to many people for the direct impact on eyes.
Even if using images is very effective, language is the most common media to communicate, for it is very clear and so almost impossible to be misunderstood by most people if there are no vague words. More over, when an idea or value is being communicated to the mass, the words are carefully chosen to avoid ambiguity, which also ensure that in most circumstances, the language is better than images. It has been generally recognized that Picasso's Dove symbolizes peace, but no one dare to say that s/he totally understand the idea or value of Picasso, since the information conveyed by images are vague. Yet if Picasso explained his painting in language, it may be easily understood by the mass. It is much common that art works such as paintings are more difficult to understand than writings.
Both images and language are effective ways to communicate values and ideas, but I maintain that the combination of two will be the best way. By doing that, the advantages of both can be utilized, but the disadvantages will disappear for the disadvantage of one can be made up by the advantage of another. The TV programs serves as a example: by watching the TV news, people can get to know not only what happens but also how it develops. The situation in Iraq is more direct and clear in TV news than that in local newspapers. Nowadays, most people are inclined to receive information in multi-media, which means that only the language or images will not meet the needs, since the idea or value can be communicated better.
In conclusion, I concede that both images and language are effective way, but the combination of both will have a best effect to communicate ideas and values to large groups of people. |
