ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."

Does society impose enough emphasis on the intellect? The speaker gives a negative answer that our society fails to accentuate the importance of reasoning and other cognitive skills. In my point of view, I concede author's conspicuous perspective in evaluating the effectiveness of current educational system, however, education is more than the project of training or developing human intelligence, it is a comprehensive work composing of providing knowledge, establishing morality and social values.

Admittedly, every level of the society reaches the consensus on the importance of education, but unfortunately deviate the focus from reasoning and other cognitive skills to the grades that students get. There seems to be that the only criterion to evaluate the effectiveness of the education is the grades. In the personal level, students studying hard for the purpose of getting better GPA so as to apply topic universities and get a good job. Although the statistical data showed that GPA and other test results might relate to students potential in future college study, I still doubt the reliability of such scores to reflect the exact intelligence of the students and question whether the one who is ranked 5% best among the total really thinks effectively than others.

For the educational professionals, they have to transfer their emphasis onto those scores in order to get better fame and further funds. Take No Kids Left Behind as an example, public schools in the states have to cancel some science, art courses to leave the places for literature and math lessons for the students to ensure that they would not be assessed as 'under the average', otherwise, the schools will lose state budgets and other kinds of support. Superficially, it looks as if this strategy is made to accelerate the competency of the students among their international peers. Nevertheless, high scores in standardized test do not necessarily promise better reasoning skills and curriculum. Failure of emphasizing on science and other lessons would inevitably impair students' development in effective thinking which plays the central role in academic study in the future.

However, education is not the work only for the society or the educational professionals. Family and community also should take part in children’s moral establishment and the ability of communication, the indispensable components of the education. But it seems become more scarce in recent years. Economic pressure makes parents busy working and leaves less time to devote to children's education. Or never could any other places better than the community provided the chances for new generation to contact with the society, whereas children are stuck by piles of homework for the purpose of getting better scores. Therefore, intelligence should not be the only part in education, other skills like communication, socialization and high level of morality should be implemented into the whole educational system to nurture the new generation.

In my final analysis, reasoning and other cognitive skills could be a major part in education and would be crucial in students' future life dealing with different kinds of difficulties they might be faced to. Although our society has focused on the grades that students get, but this is never the right criterion. Every level of the society, like parents, communities and schools should devote into the comprehensive work of education, not only on intellect, but also in morality, socialization and other capabilities.
