题目:ARGUMENT 140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

The author asserts that Proffessor Thomas(PT) must be paid more wage and a promotion that she deserves or she is probibaly to leave the Elm City University(ECU). At the first glance,the argument seems reasonable,but we will find several flaws in it with a scrutiny.

To begin with, the author claims PT is popular among students because her classes are the largest in the university. We don't if the students have enough classes to choose. Maybe PT's subjects are compulsory ones that all students have to learn, while only PT teach these subjects or any other teacher who also teach the same subject having too poor a teaching skill that students have to choose PT. Before the arthor shows evidence that students have enough option,the author couldn't convince us PT is popular among students.

What is more, the quantity of money PT bring to the university can say nothing about her teaching and reseach abilities. It is possibly that PT is very good at persuading others, or she has many friends rich and give her this money.The author must deny these possibilities or we can't believe in PT's teaching and reseaching abilities.

Even if PT really has a high level of teaching and reseaching areas, it doesn't  mean her salary is worthy. We don't know other teachers' salary both in ECU and in other universities. Maybe all other teachers in ECU have a much lower salary than PT and in other universities even the excellent teacher like PT wage less than her. The author should provide us other teachers' salary so we can know if PT worth her annual salary.

Also,there is no indication that PT feeling like leaving ECU. It is very likely she feel ECU is a good university with students loving her and a perfect wage. If she leaves, she may lose these and not promised to get all of these in a new place. The author should instegate what PT is really thinking.

Finally,even if PT is leaving,raising salary is not the only way to keep her back and we aren't sure she will stay by providing a higher pay and a promotion. Maybe she just want ECU more care about her reseach so no high salary could let her stay or she is not satisfaction about the administrition of ECU that even more money will not keep her back. What is also probibaly is that PT want more money and a 10000 raise is not enough.

To sum up,before the author integate PT's popularity,teaching and reseaching abilities,other teachers' salary level,PT's idea about ECU and what she want,he or she can't conclude PT must be paid more.
存在着,仅此而已

(没有点出关键,popularity不重要,讲课质量才是关键) We don't if the students have enough classes to choose. ts是筹钱和科研能力没关系,结果你的论证是猜测为什么筹了那么多钱,矛盾否?着一攻击点应该很明确的,教师的任务是教学和科研,虽然筹集资金对科研意义很大,但不等于可以用筹集资金来衡量科研能力,应该关心她的论文发表的数量和质量,参加的会议,获得的专业奖)
