40. "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
The speaker of the topic makes an assertion that scholars and researchers should concentrate on their interests in spite of being concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It's tempting when considering that whether the research is valuable for society or not, interest enable the scholars and researchers to devote their full enthusiasm to the work, which maybe a huge wealth of our future. While the claim seems undoubted in abstract, it still overlooks some practical problems.
Admittedly, the boundary of whether their work benefits the larger society is ambiguous. Those which seems useless today or just solve the tiny difficulties we desire to know may serve as an base for the further study. Sometimes, even the scholars and researchers can not decide which research is worthwhile, without mentioning others. Thus the only guide for their work is work itself which appeals to the researchers. Therefore we can not ignore those interests, even how unusual or idiosyncratic they are. Let’s bring our discussion to a more present and practical context. A concrete example appealing illustrates this point. Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance is at first just Mendel's interest in plant. If he was concerned with the contribution to the larger society, he can be a good priest and teacher, but the foundation of genetic engineering maybe delayed for years.
Moreover, the curiosity and interests roused by the problems they come cross provide us the impetus to overcome the obstacles we have to face It's our human nature that we poured our energy and passion into the things attracting us and do our endeavor to ensure the results perfect. Even the immediate social problems should leave to the researchers that feel interested in them. If such subjects are handled by those who have no interest in them, these researchers may even consider them as boring missions, their attitudes decide that they may not take the missions seriously, which may result in a slow process and some problems.
However, if possible, scholars and researchers should try to do make a contribution to the larger society as well, for there are lots of problems still existing in our society, which, without the help from them, are hard to be settled. If we can not solve the immediate problem, the condition to make researched they interested in, to some degree, may not be guaranteed. After all, many researches are supported by the government and other organizations, if the government and these organizations are busy coping with the problems of larger society, how can the researches get funds or some necessities?
In sum, taking all these factors into account, the science can be developed only if the interests are put in the first place and, at the same time, we can not neglect the demand of larger society. Therefore, we should find a balance between them and thus scholars and researches can be completely devoted into what they are interested without disturbing by other problems. |
