Arguement71 Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. Until fairly recently, the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is low. New copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. Therefore, we can expect the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly.
The speaker expected that the electricity used of copper-extraction industry will decline significantly by the new copper-extracting technologies. However, I found the author logically unconvinced in several aspects.
To begin with, the speaker asserted that new copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40% less electricity than the old one is doubtful. The article mention above that the old technologie extract pure copper from ore requires much more electric energy if the proportion of copper in the ore is low; and, he also mention that new technologie extract pure copper much less electric energy when the proportion of copper in the ore is high----in other words, the amount of electricity of the same method exist difference when the proportion of copper vary. That is, if the proportion of copper in the ore which extracted by old method is just low, and the one extracted by new method is just high, how to calculate the cost of electricity? The same amount of raw ore do not equal to the same ore. Whether the cost of electricity used by new method when the proportion of copper in ore is low will greater than the old technologies? The article support no information about the proportion of “the same amount of raw ore”, lacking such information, the author cannot draw a conclusion that new method will use less electricity than the old method.
Secondly, even if the new technologies can save electricity when extract the same ore, the author assumed the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry will decline is unwarranted. It is entirely possible that the new method can save electricity but cost much more other material. Or perhaps the costing of new technologies is so high that no factory adopt it. It is equal possible that new method extract pure copper from raw ore less than old one, and waste of a large number of raw ore. Each of which may cause the new technologies cannot popularize in copper-extraction industry. And, the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry is hardly affected.
Finally, even though the new method is widely adopt in the copper-extraction industry, the author ignored other factors affect the amount of electricity. In fact, the demands of copper may increase by the time, perhaps the cost of extract pure copper bring down and the used of copper extensive than before. The only result of the less electricity might be the greater ouput of pure copper. Without considering and elimining these and other possible factor, the author cannot convinced me that use such technologies can decline the amount of electricity in copper-extraction industry, let alone that can decline significantly.
To sum up, this analysis relies on certain doubtful assumptions and unwarranted evidence that render it fails to substantiate his assertion. To validate it, further investigation and analysis are needed. To better evaluate the argument, I would need to know the amount of electricity that two methods when extract the same component of raw ore. And, the author should provide the orther information about new technologies such as other costing and the extracting pure copper can be extracted compare with the old one. |
