TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 556 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2007-7-20 下午 10:52:44
The speaker asserts that in the era of television, the importance of reading books has faded since people can learn as much knowledge by means of watching TV. In my opinion, with the advance of TV popularization, TV plays an increasingly significant role in informing us huge amount of information. However, in contrast with reading books, watching TV still has its deficiencies. Thus we can not lose sight to the momentous function of reading.
First of all, we have to concede the importance of TV for it greatly speeds up the transmitting of information as well as widely spread the information. In modern society, we can fetch various and fresh information from TV just staying at home. For instance, we can appreciate the wonderful concert and the exciting football match which are held on the other side of the globe by the means of TV. And we can also be aware of the content of the international conference and the regional war in remote place immediately. As for the students, they would gain knowledge of their text books through the educational programs on TV. For that matter, we can learn much knowledge which is not only large in size but also characteristic as fresh from TV.
However, the foregoing advantages of TV can not blind us its deficiencies and limitations when compared to reading books. Firstly, TV lays limitation in itself since TV is large in size and we can not take it anywhere to gain information. Secondly, the time for broadcasting its programs are fixed without any change to be flexible to audiences' schedule, thus we may miss our favorite programs when we are engaging in other affairs. Thirdly, the kinds of TV programs are designed to address the needs of general public rather than catering to every audience’s appetite, so the specific needs of diverse audiences can not be served. As for books, what is portable is that we can bring them with us and read them whenever and wherever we want. Besides, we can easily get any books we are interested in from bookshop and library. Therefore watching TV could not be comparable with reading books in reference to the convenience.
In addition, the TV programs also have the negative characteristic as for its continuity. As we all know, TV programs are broadcasted in sequence. If we miss some details of information or find ourselves interested in some affairs on TV, we are unable to review them as we could do when reading a book. That means we may not exactly catch the useful information we need from TV just for one sight. On the other hand, in order to compensate its deficiency, we have to highly concentrate on the programs for a long period of time which may cause a series of problems on our health such as extreme fatigue, decrease in sight or even insomnia. Hence, we should not overlook above mentioned negative effects of TV.
In final analysis, the speaker's contention is assertive since he overlooks the great merits of reading books while neglects the deficiency of TV. What we should do is to pay more attention to reading books which are still of great importance in learning and at the same time make full use of TV to get abundant information from it.
