Issue50

“In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.”


I don't agree that all faculty in college or university should work in the non-academic field that relevant to the courses they teach in order to improve the quality of instruction. We can improve the educational quality by other various means, and no one is sure that through the means of require all faculty work in the field that outside the academic world will improve the quality of instruction.

Firstly, it is unreliable to require all faculty to work in the field that outside the academic world but relevant to the courses they teach. The issue did not tell us how long the faculty should work in non-academic field? On the one hand, if the teacher just work in non-academic field for a short time, they will hard to get the job position. As a company, they usually require the employer work for a long time in the company to adapt to the system of company so that the employer can create more value. On the other hand, If the faculty work in the field that outside the academic world for a long time, though they can accumulate some working experience and learn some new knowledge about the field so that they can teach students and improve the quality of instruction in some aspects, in contrary, they also need spend more time and energy to non-academic work, consequently, there will affect the work in college or university, and may influence the quality of instruction in some other aspects. This is the reason that in China, the faculty in school is forbidden to do other works that not relate to the teaching for to provide a guarantee to the quality of education.

Secondly, different subject has respective requirement, some majors are pure academic research, and don't need relative working experience very much. College and university also play a research institution role in some aspects, and there are many great scientists and philosopher are working in college and university, and they also undertake some teaching work in college and university. Some of them are engage in a major that just pure abstract academic research, such as classical Chinese, pure math research, these subjects are not require the experience in relative non-academic feild but require teachers to read more researchful references, do more experiments so that they can teach students to get more information to help students progress. For example, Albert Einstein is one of the most famous scientists in the world, and his research about relativity is very abstract, obviously, he can not get working experience about the relativity by concrete work.

Thirdly, we have to admit that teaching students how to apply what they learned to their future job is the ultimate goal of the education, students also need try to accumulating working experience in relative field under teacher's instructions so that they can achieve a high level in study. Admittedly, the faculy practise in relative non-academic fetid can provide them working experience so that they can help students to learn how to apply what they learned to work, but it does not mean that we should require all faculty in different majors to do that. College and university should provide more practice chance to students, because students is the people who need working experience mostly, and only when students can apply the knowledge freely, and can adapt to the job readily, that means the school have achieved their goal, and it also means the quality of instruction have achieved a high level.

In sum, the quality of instruction was finally reflected by students, the faculty should try to instruct students in various aspects. working in the field that outside the academic world could improve the ability of some faculty, but we should not consider the faculty as the centre of the teaching activity but students, and provide more chance to let students to do by themselves, then, the students will get the real knowledge.
