Argu169
Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we can not expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouse have a chance of employment, new professors will by more likely to accept our offers.

In this argument, the speaker points out that Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member they hire, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to their faculty and improving the morale of their entire staff. To justify the conclusion, the arguer cites the example of Bronston College where professors prefer to have their spouse employed in the same geographical area. In addition, the arguer assumes that this offer of a possible job for their spouse on the campus, no matter whether it will be accepted, is the only factor that the new professors consider in deciding whether to accept a university position. This argument is unconvincing for general critical flaws.

First of all, the argument is based on a hasty generalization. According to the argument, if the university could offer their spouse employment in the same town, whether they are suitable or not, the new and famous professors will accept the position. Perhaps this job is not suitable to the spouse, or the spouse has another contended job in other place, we can see that the professor does not go to this small town for the position. In addition, on if the spouse do not have jobs, could the university offer varies jobs to contend different needs of their spouse? From this, we can reveal that if they do not offer idea jobs to their spouse, and meanwhile they hardly do this, the professors do not make a choice for the offers.

Secondly, a hint of other factors still influent the new professors  to receive the university offers. Because of the small town, without high laborage, good conditions, a series of lab equipments or a mass of research fund ect., the university cannot make sure the positions could attract the new professors staying here.

Finally, the arguer fails to take into account the geographical factors in the analysis. Although they are small towns, there exists difference between the two towns. At Bronston College, it  reveals that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. However, the arthor does not provide the situation about economic conditions, environment conditions a and ect. the small town, which Bronston College is located, has a higher personal average income, quiet environment, convenient traffic and particularly suitable to live so that it attracts the gifted teachers and famous professors to live there. What’s more, Bronston College is a famous college due to some professions, and well circumstance of study that the professors and gifted teachers are willing to accept the offers. In contract, the town which Pierce University is located does not has these advantages. So we can not conclude that if their spouse have a chance of employment, new professors will by more likely to accept our offers. Perhaps, the fund spent investment is unworthful and finally don’t give any progress to Pierce University.

To sum up, the argument is not well reasoned. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer would have to demonstrate that an offer of employment to the spouse is the only condition than new professors consider on accepting Pierce’s offer. Additionally, the arguer must provide the evidence that the two towns have the same conditions in other aspects.
