ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Whether a great piece of work of lasting value comes from the artist or the critic? Though partly agree with the speaker's persistence on the latter, I maintain that the effect of critic can not be ignored. The combination of both achieve  lasting value.

As to artists, they are makers of artistic works, the gravers of beauty, the composers of elegance. Without them, we will never share a fantastic feeling with the their greatness. It is the artists'  talent ,experiences and efforts that achieve numerous great arts of lasting value. No one else except for Monet, one of the most famous impressionism, who has a certain feeling in light, color and shape, could create the series of "candock", which sells at the highest price now in the world. Artists give us enjoy of beauty leave to the society things of lasting value. No great art will exists without artists.

However, the true meaning in these great artistic works can rarely be understood without the help of critics. Artists usually convey their own thoughts in their works that hardly noticed by common people. Critics can dig the internal essence out and convey to the commons to make the arts understood by more people in its real value. Only by the  critics' "translation"  can be realized the lasting value of great works. Standing in front of Van Gogh's Sunflower, a person not been trained in art just values it by the colors, brushwork, scene, all that ranged to the appearance. However, if a critic's demonstration about the background, painter's individual experience and relevant introduction is available at that time, we can feel the painter's heart when he was drawing and get a further understanding of the painting. In short, we just feel the art by appearance, but with the critic, "reading" it, during which, the lasting value can only be discovered.

Furthermore, critics' suggestion is of a great help for artists themselves. Artists could get a reflection of their works through critics' comments to know themselves more clearly and make further progress. People can not progress without communication. We all have a similar experience that studying alone acts far less effective than communicating with others. Different people's comments give us an overall view of both advantages and disadvantages of ourselves, so as to artists. Especially for young artists, who have less experiences in career, certain comments may be an impetus to create better works which possibly of long lasting value in future.

To sum up, from what has been discussed above, we can conclude that artists play an important role in creation of great art works. At the same time, critics reveal the internal essence value and convey it to the commons. In all, the great things of lasting values can not leave either of them.
