Nowadays technological advancement has highly increased our work efficiency and broadened the ways of obtaining information. Everyone seems to concern only the current economy situation and society problems so that it is claimed that history study is non-meaning unless it is relevant to people's daily life. Although I agree with the statement for the describing of the importance of the relevant history study, overlooking the other part of history study or even history itself as a discipline is a sort of superficialness and arbitrary.
To begin with, instead of focusing only on the things which directly related to our daily lives, people should take an overall perspective and concern more about our living city, country and the whole world. These kinds of knowledge may not have direct related to, but do influence and have a deep relation with our daily lives where the value of history study lies on. People may not care about when the pyramids were built, but it was the ancient people who observed the periodicity of river floods invented the time system which we use everyday. At the same time, the historical conflicts between certain religions or races also affect our oil price. As a matter of fact, we can always find the deeper relationship between the history and out daily lives as well as the large view of the world.
The second reason for me to disagree with the argument is that it might lead to a confusion and a debate of which part of history is relevant to our daily lives, especially in case of children education and government investment to research. Who can perform as the judge? Under which definition one study of history may be called as "relevant" to our daily lives? If we use this concept to instruct our education program and academic research, children will not obtain the truly understand of the world since their knowledge is an unordered integration of fragments, while the scholars will devote to argue their studies are worthy to be learnt and invested rather than the study itself. In short, this kind of claim has a fatal potential of negatively influencing the society.
Furthermore, just contrasting to the informed argument, the study of history, not limited only to the events related to daily lives, is of big value for both society and individuals improvement. History is like a wheel, there are always some things what may happen again. People can study the experience from the failure, discover his disadvantage and ultimately find out the way to success. Society may recognize the sprouts of conflict and contravention, avoid the sharpening and turbulences, or even the wars. By studying the history, one can have a comprehensive understanding of his own culture as well as the daily political, economic policies. Moreover, this study help the people from different areas well understand the current situations of each other, and in turn promote the world peace.
In conclusion, everything in the world must have certain relation between each other. Blaming the history study has no value by considering just the finite direct relationship with daily life is unjust and may lead to further social problem. Moreover, history plays an important role in many aspects, from individual grown up to social improvement. I would highly recommend everyone to study history. |
