In this argument the editorial suggest that collages and universities adopt a system as Groveton ‘s to reduce the cheats in exams. To get support the writer cites the statistic evidence and the result of a survey by Groveton honor council. However, after scrutiny I find the argument suffers from a few problems.

The first problem lies in the unwarranted fact that cheating has declined. However, the mere fact that cases of cheating have decrease from 30 to 14 can not prove it. For example, maybe some students fail to report the cheatings after they discover cheating for some consideration, maybe students in exam care little about others and thus can not notice cheating. If any of the case is true, then the declined number of cheating can not indicate the real condition any conclusion based on this is unreliable.

Secondly, even if cheating has eventually decreased, the writer unfairly assumes that the honor system is the only reason for it. Since the writer fails to rule out other possible factors and measures that could reduce cheating. For that matter, it is entirely possible that at the same time, Groveton improve the quality of teachers, or the Groveton successfully promote students’ interest in learning. Any of the cases may help reduce cheating in exams So unless the writer provide direct evidence that the honor system is effective, the suggestion is unconvincing to me.

Thirdly, the result of the survey conducted by honor council is highly suspect. The writer fails to prove that the students surveyed are representative of all the students in Groveton and the opinions of them are really what they think. Maybe only those students who do not cheat consistently responses to the survey, in which case the survey can not reveal whether the system is effective. Even if the survey reflect all the students, they may not tell the truth because the pressure and fear caused by the honor council who conducts the survey. Moreover, to be less likely to cheat do not mean to not cheat at all, so the result is unreliable and can lend little credence to the suggestion.

Finally, the writer draws a false analogy between Groveton and other collages and universities. Since there are differences that may influence the effectiveness in other places, even if the honor system is effective in Groveton, whether it can remain effective in other places is uncertain. Unless the writer can provide enough evidence to prove that other collages are analogous to Groveton, the suggestion is mere a poor advice.  

To sum up, due to a few flaws the article can not convince me that the honor system is a good choice for collages to reduce cheating. To better support it, the writer need to prove that the system is effective in Groveton and applicable to other collages.
