In this statement, the speaker gives disproportionate emphasis on nonmainstream areas of inquiry. I strongly disagree with this statement that nonmainstream areas of inquiry compared to mainstream science play an important role in our society. In fact, the astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits are very far from being “science”, although some of them indeed meet the special needs to individuals in some level.


Firstly, the merits of nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as augur and astrology are somewhat questionable, but some nonmainstream areas of inquiry in the certain knowledge of pseudoscience are positively harmful. Perhaps the ability to predict is the most highly desired knowledge for human beings. Sometimes these instructions from augurs or astrologers can bring positive psychological boost to people who being in trouble, but ones who can finally  help people to overcome troubles are people themselves, definitely not those augurs or astrologers. Conversely, some instructions given by augurs are really unreasonable even harmful. After all, true augurs and astrologers are few, whereas cheaters are everywhere. For instance, there was a large restaurant in a Chinese mall in San Gabirel, California. According to the instructions of an augur, they put half-filled fish tanks on both sides of their escalator, but there is no fish in the tanks. Obviously, this kind of so-called instruction is ridiculous as well as irresponsibility.


In addition, in such a changing, complex society formerly simple solution to human’s needs become complicated. Many of life’s problems which were solved by asking astrologer or augur are beyond the capability of these people without science basics to resolve. In ancient society, before people went out to hunting, they always asked the augur to point out the direction in which can hunt preys. Then the augur told people the “indication of god” by revolving a platform. However, modern science tells us that it is an application of probability. Because the probability of any direction is almost equal, avoids people to go only one area hunting. It can protect preys from extremely hunting, as well as allows people to gain enough food from nature. On the surface, these predictions or instructions from god or some paranormal power are interpreted by augur but science, actually there always be some science principles involved. Even some of them cannot be expressed now, as the development of the science and technology, they will be finally revealed in the future. So mainstream science is an essential approach to solve various problems in our life, at the same time, it is the power of our society. In a word, without the support of mainstream science, these no-mainstream areas of inquiry will lose the meaning of exist, and tend to be irrational.

To sum up, these non-mainstream areas of inquiry cannot instead of the critical role of mainstream science, even a few of them can meet some needs in the past or special situation. However, it is rare astrology, fortune-telling that allows human beings and our society to confront and overcome those internal fears and real problems。

有一点我要说一说，就是你基本上把非主流科学限定为了占卜，占星术。其实非主流科学并不等同于伪科学。很好的例子就是哥白尼，他在当时那个年代所研究的东西，就是非主流研究，但是实际情况他所研究的才是真理，不能认为是伪科学。你可以把这样的观点加进去，严谨你的分析。
