Do non-mainstream areas of inquiry which are defined comparing with so-called mainstream sciences always present us with far more negative effects than positive ones? In the era of rapid scientific and technological development leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, many people may give an affirmative answer to this question. In my opinion, however, the final judgement should depend a case-by-case analysis.
There are many problems that the mainstream sciences cannot explain and solve, which provide the space for the non-mainstream pursuits. Moreover, some so-called non-mainstream pursuits today may become mainstream fields of science tomorrow. Let’s bring our discussion here to a more present and practical context. It can be given a concrete example that Copernicus’ heliocentric theory in the 16th century was looked upon as heterodoxy, for it contradicted the universe postulated by Aristotle and Ptolemy, which was the mainstream science of that time. But with the development of science and the improvement of human ability and skills to acquaint ourselves with the word, the mainstream significance of Copernicus’ Theory of Heliocentricism has gradually been discovered. Meanwhile ,in the area of chemistry, Lavoisier (1743-1794) ,the French chemist, also challenged the mainstream ideas and time proves his theory. These facts illustrate the point that mainstream and non-mainstream areas of inquiry can sometimes exchange their places, and some so-called non-mainstream pursuits may gain their mainstream significance in the future.
From the personal perspective, other non-mainstream area, like astrology, fortune-telling and psychics, have survived for thousands of years and still hold considerable influence over the masses for several reasons. First and foremost, they address certain human needs which mainstream sciences inherently cannot. One such need involves our anxious propensity to know our fate and future. Such is human nature, that most people become much more optimistic about their lives and are encouraged to do a better job by the prediction of astrology or fortune-telling, and they will try to avoid the predicted doom ,such as driving more carefully than ever to dodge the likely happened accident. What’s more, many people attempt to shift the burden of making difficult choices and prevent bad feelings of infinite choices they have made, such as uncertainty, insecurity and confusion, by relying on non-mainstream areas for guidance. Without doubt, this indeed provide them with comfort.
Another need is that people demand console for heart and courage to conquer the misfortune when it happens. When confronting with some dilemma, people often regard the astrology and fortune-telling as the last things they should turn for some help when they cannot get any succor from the mainstream areas after thinking over the complex problems in some traditional ways such as the logical way and trying all the best to deal with them in the rational ways. It is a natural response to ask the astrology or fortune-telling for help and pray to God when our close relatives are badly hurt and even the doctors say they are extremely in danger. In addition, a patient in awfully dangerous conditions may recover miraculously after almost everyone except his beloved family has given up the hope by consulting to astrology or religion. This incident is not rare in the society for the reason that it has loomed up wide public concern. Some recovered patients believe that they have seen the God and become religious. Whether it is true or not we cannot tell, but at least one essential factor is undoubted that the great console and confidence they gain from the non-mainstream areas exerts tremendous influence on their illness.
However, while non-mainstream pursuits may help some people feel better about themselves,their choices and their consequences, speculation of this kind like fortune-telling cannot be encouraged to emerge. They can exist under a certain standard as the supplement of the mainstream science, but overextended development of them will be indeed counterproductive, even harmful. Because some of the pursuits are not rooted in reason and have not means to evaluate the legitimacy of these avenues of inquiry, participants become vulnerable to self-deception, false hopes, fantastic ideas and detrimental delusion. Some so-named insights gained from these pursuits can easily serve as a convenient excuse for dangerous, irrational and unreasonable actions. Therefore, we should appeal to the authority, to work out strict laws and regulations to control the development of non-mainstream areas.
In sum, while the mainstream science provide human beings with an increasing number of material goods, the non-mainstream areas afford more human care to some standards. From the reason presented above, I commit to the notion that non-mainstream pursuits should be the supplement of the mainstream science under the control of the authority, not only for the mental needs of human beings, but also for the development of our society.

这是我的第一篇Issue，多少也一点感言吧。稀里糊涂写了785字，还是在最后草草收尾的情况下。我个人都觉得自己虎头蛇尾，很不满意。因为开始是慢慢悠悠地在写，而后面则是在赶时间，一点都没考虑用好单词好句型什么的。
早晨起床之后磨蹭了半天终于坐在了书桌前，虽然我打字速度很慢需要勤加练习，但还是决定先写在纸上，我看着纸会比较有感觉。写了有四分之一多发觉自己挑了一个很难写的角度，和大家多数的思路是相反的，很郁闷，但是不想改了，就硬着头皮继续往下写，写写停停，这个过程痛苦得我总是想要吃东西发泄情绪。一上午就在磨蹭中度过了。。。:funk:
过了中午吃完饭实在是都不想看那张作文纸了，所以开始看电影改善情绪，又看了一遍ITV拍的《诺桑觉寺》，本来一直以为拍简奥斯汀只能是BBC，但这一部确实是我比较喜欢的（其他两部没法看），原因很简单啊。呵呵，男主角比较帅。J.J.Field那种明显很坏的笑容让我一看见他笑就不由自主想笑。看到了两点多，在笑中睡着。睡了一会儿被电话吵醒，我从当当网上买的盘居然比预计提前送到了，结果很兴奋地又看了半天，后来发现不但一下午没学习而且大脑还兴奋得缺氧了，开始很困。
去大姨家吃饭，回来开始赶时间写剩下的一半作文，痛苦加上对自己的鄙视，我怎么能打字这么慢的，跟写作文用的时间几乎相等。。。。
不管怎么样在规定日期的几乎前一秒交上了，没有完成一篇自己期待中的Issue不能说是不遗憾的，不过，也还可以吧。
