147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

Is that the only choice that we have to choose one between tradition and modernization, as the speaker asserts? While I agree that the modernization conflictw with  tradition in a sense, I insist that they can coexist in many factors, and even improve each other in our pursuit of development.

Admittedly, it is true that modernization and tradition are contradictory in a sense. They are two totally different concepts: tradition refers to the values, customs, way of life, crafts, etc. that are handed down from generation to generation in a society, while the process of urbanization, industrialization and democratization. They march on in  two different directions and often conflict with each other in some cases. Take urbanization as an example. With the rapid pace of urbanization, more and more construction stand up in our city, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. Mostly, for the consideration of economic benefits, historic buildings, even some of which envolve a high value of historical research, have to give the precedence over the modern buildings--being removed. Furthermore, a lot of traditional customs and technique disappeared during the process of modernization. Traditional values systems are also collapsing. These let us able to see clearly that a gulf lies between them.

Granted that tradition and modernization have some bifurcation in certain aspects, it does not follow that they cannot coexist. Tradition and modernization are just two respects of one thing. They appears different, but have the same essence inside in most cases. Usually, they could improve each other and symbiosis better.

On one hand, tradition can supply rich resources to be used for modernization. Tradition is the treasure handed down from our forefathers, which consists of great wisdom, experience and technique. They often provide us with the most basic, while vital principle in most respects. The architecture is a case in point. Though the architecture has been developed for thousands of years, from classicism to modernism, people now are still using the scale, color, shape which concluded by forefathers to design buildings in modern society. Similarly, it is the same with the literature, contemporary poets are still using the classic trope, rhyme and framework in their creations. The essence of the world would not change and the precious conclusions from predecessor are of great use to modernization.

On the other hand, tradition can also be shown and involved in modernization through transformation and reformation. As the society moving its rapid pace forward, tradition is less likely to be what it is previously, but it can be transformed or reform to avoid disappearance and even to flourish. Nowaways, everything seems to be simpler and simpler and it is the same in house design. People are in favor of a simple life and like succinct decoratrion of their house. As classicism considered a complex style such as Baroque and Rococo, a new design style calle new-classicism is born to meet the pursuits of classicism. However, the new style which implicate an essence of classism uses new material, advanced technique and modern concept. The style is warmly welcomed and even cause a "new-classicism" storm. The factor perfectly illustrate the reborn of tradition during the process of modernizaion.

In sum, though tradition and modernization have a little conflicts sometimes, the contradiction do not influence the coexistence of them. Furthermore,they can improve each other in a rather harmonic way so that either need not to be abondoned and we can preserve both of them.
