144. "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
艺术家而不是评论家带给了社会一些具有持久价值的东西。
Who gives society something of lasting value, the artist, or the critic? According to this statement, the answer is the artist. I strongly agree the speaker’s view that the artist not the critic(这个结构a..not..b没问题吗) who gives society something of lasting value. Actually, in most times, the critic attempts to do just the opposite of creating values.
Admittedly, sometimes it is true that the critic bring some valuable judgments and indirection which can help us better to enjoy the work of art. For example, there are so many works of art are created by those artists without reputation, and people cannot enjoy them without useful information conveyed by the critic. A good judgment and recommendation from some critic with authority make it possible to know by people(for people to know them). In a sense, the critic provides opportunities which people can contact with those excellent art works. However, providing such opportunities does not mean creating values. In addition, these cases are rare and therefore are too specific and too weak to strengthen the speaker’s view.(语言没有什么错误,但是论证不深入,没有举出评论家对艺术的贡献,也就一句话,其他的话都是重复)
Firstly, aesthetic is a process of subjective feeling, so there is not a universal and objective standard in this process. As we know, there are one thousand Hamlets for one thousand audients.(audience).Whether a work of art is valued or not largely depends on the different individual’s inclinations, rather than some certain critics’ judgment according to the standard which they have learned from art school. It would amaze you how comfortable the critic feels jumping to an unwarranted conclusion. After all, this might be the only thing the critic can do. However, these conclusions not only fail to create values, but also impede the real artist creating values by their art works. In addition, the critic impedes the enjoyment of art. The critics always are extremely serious when they evaluate works of art. Unfortunately, most of them cannot recognize artistic merit from the work of art, some even cannot distinguish works of art from others. (这段开始说审美是根据个人的爱好,后来说评论家不能作出正确的评价)
Secondly, how the artist creates value by their works of art such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. Perhaps the oldest definition of the value created by the artist is the pleasure he or she provides. The point is that when we pay for a ticket of a football game, our purpose is to gain the pleasure that the players can bring to us, definitely not the commentary. Obviously, the player creates the value of tickets, not the commenter. (举看足球的例子,)
But perhaps the great contribution of artist is that the artist presents us with insight into what is eternal and universal. We can still feel the passion when we see Vincent Van Gogh’s painting such as sunflower after more than one hundred years; we can still be encouraged when we hear the 9th symphonies composed by Beethoven. The real works of art maintain a profound effect on next generations and their values will never fade away. Conversely, those views about these works of art, weather praise or critic, have be forgotten for a long time. (绿字值得学习)
To sum up, the artist create the two values, no matter the work of art itself or the pleasure and instruction it brings to us, both of them are so valued that the critic cannot give us.(结尾段观点明确,但如果不看结尾段,很难看出你正文的观点是什么,你有自己的观点,只要自圆其说就行, 但最好把简洁明了的观点放到段首)
