题目:ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
字数:390    后来增加了一点      用时:00:40:00          日期:2007-8-14 12:21:11

The claim points out that scandal can be useful by revealing what speaker and reformer would never show. I cannot agree with this opinion any more since history and millions of examples have informed us the importance of revealing scandals.

The first important benefit of scandals is to build up the system of necessary monitoring on some certain realm such as politics and business for the sake of ordinary people. The disclosing of the fact that one kind of main products of Mitsubishi Motor has great defects which resulted in traffic accidents is helpful to protect a great many consumers. And if the scandal of Hitler gaining enormous welfare for his own interest unjustifiably before election had been revealed, perhaps the Germans would not believe in Hitler’s political slogans and people all over the world would not had to suffer the pains of war. Just like Jefferson said, It is just for all people to know about everything true and false even if some of which speaker and reformer would be reluctant to talk about.

Scandals are also helpful to build up a good preference for just behavior and restrict standard. This is especially true when it comes to the academic field. For example, after Woo Suet Hwang's fabricating data in stem-cell research, one of the greatest scandals in recent years, a professor in Harvard declared and I quoted that he will never enlist his name on the co-writer of papers which he haven't been involved in. This demonstrates important lessons on self-demand and career morality, just like academic seriousness in this case, can be drawn from scandals.

However, we cannot pay much more attention on scandals which will be likely to result in excessive doubting and the waste of time and energy. Return to the example of Hwang’s scandal, many scientists is afraid that this will damage not only public perceptions of stem-cell research, but science's image as a whole. In another example, Clinton's scandal attracted much more tax expenditure and workforce by Starr. These inputs most of which proved to be unnecessary are spent in details which are only useful to satisfy the desire to know privacy of president. To prevent these undesirable results from happening, we should shed a unreasonable light on scandals and not exaggerating their influence.

Although scandals are effective to help people to find the reality of facts and pay more attentions on the career morality standard, it is crucial to call for a balance between revealing scandals and investing based on the cost-benefit analysis, and differentiate critical thinking from justifiable trust.
