argument65 [0710G +U Aug小组]第15次作业 gungun 题目:ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States. "For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses." In this analysis, the arguer attempts to convince us that the best way to improve profits in cheese chain store is stopping imported cheeses but concentrating on domestic cheeses. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer cites the statistic evidence from their newest stores and a recent survey by Cheeses of the World Magazine. While this argument has some merits, a series of flaws seriously undermine the line of reasoning. In the first place, the arguer cites the sale conditions of the five best-selling newest cheeses stores in Wisconsin and makes a hasty generalization that they should concentrate on domestic cheeses, which is groundless. Five best-selling cheeses newest stores can not be representative of the trend of customers' taste. Apart from these five stores, the sale condition of imported cheese may high-rising. Even admitted that all customers' in Wisconsin are prefer domestic cheese, this kind of situation might not be suitable for any other cities. Perhaps in cities like New York and other cities containing places of interest, a lot of foreign visitors may go to cheese chain store and choose their favorite domestic cheeses which are mostly imported. In a word, if we have not get the sale situation in all cities including those attracting foreign visitors who may attempt to choose imported cheeses we can not draw such a hasty conclusion that imported cheeses should be somewhat abandoned. Even we accept the supposed situation that customers all around the nation are fond of domestic cheeses, discontinuing stocking many of our imported cheese are not appliable. Domestic customers are fond of domestic cheeses but some of them may still in favor of imported cheeses. Cheeses stores can get much more profits in imported cheese than domestic cheeses in the reason that the cost on inventing new domestic cheeses to in the favor of domestic customers are high while that cost in imported cheeses does not exist. Although the total purchasing account of imported cheeses may be far lower than that of domestic cheeses, the profits may be higher. There are other ways to improve the profit other than discontinuing the imported cheeses. Improving the manufacturing and transportation productivity, constructing manufacturing factories in suburban districts other than downtown area, purchasing cheaper resources from domestic factories -- are all the methods to improve the profit of the cheeses chain store other than stopping imported cheeses. In summary, this argument is not convincing as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer must provide more facts on the sale situation around the county rather than in Wisconsin and other ways to improve the profit other than stopping providing imported cheese.
