题目:ISSUE54 - "History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today."
字数:538          用时:00:57:42          日期:2007-8-21 14:02:13

Can the past help people to make important decisions today?  Does history tell us only this viewpoint?  In my opinion, although, in many cases, problems of today are far beyond the reach of knowledge of the past, history generally directs us toward a good decision; moreover, history teaches us not only how value itself to be, but also every aspect of the contemporaries' life.

Admittedly, since many important decisions today require much learning on the modern world exclusively to the past, only holding aged knowledge, one tends to make false choice.  For example, the contemporaries face serious environmental problems, such as damage of ozone layer, over-increasing of carbon oxide in the atmosphere, pollution of water and destroy of forest.  If one resort much to the experience of the past, he/she may not take these problems into account, and decide to enlarge the industry limitlessly, in that the ancient almost have no idea on the issues -- no matter the shrinking of Amazon rain forest or the disease caused by dirty water is out of the scope of their imagination.  Thus, as to some problems faced today, one need appeal to the modern learning to make a better choice, rather than the past.

However, as long as what happens in the past is usually the precedent of what society encountered today, history generally acts as a good manual for the contemporaries.  As to the selection of one's political belief, the knowledge of the past teaches him/her a full-text interpretation about the spirit, the purpose, the function and the effect of every political standpoint, which can help people much to distinguish them clearly and to abandon the adverse, such as Nazism, and advocate the progressing, such as democracy.  Moreover, another compelling example lies in the field of law.  For a complex case, the court may find it hard to make a correct and proper judgment upon a complex case. Nevertheless, the old cases, with whose help the jury and the judge can simply make a citation to accurately determine whether and how serious a person is guilty, play a meaningful role in the procedure.  Hence, thanks to the experience of the past, one can make decision in a more suitable and easy way.

Furthermore, not only with whether it is helpful in the behalf of modern people does history inform us, it addresses more aspect of the world rather than a special area.  After all, since almost everything today comes from history, the knowledge that people hold now is taught by it.  Despite the discretion as discussed above coming from the past, history tells what we are and what the world around us is, cultivating our heart and shaping our mind.  As long as learning our moral principle and knowledge from the past, we should not limit the function of history in the issue of revealing whether knowing about the past can help people to make decisions today.

Overall, while conceding the fact that only resorting to the past may leads to false judgment, I emphasis more on the advantage that history offers to us when we confront with various problems.  What is more, one should brighten his/her own eye to see the function of history in a full scale.

Admittedly, since many important decisions today require much learning on the modern world exclusively to the past, only (by) holding aged knowledge, one tends to make false choice.  For example, the contemporaries face serious environmental problems, such as damage of ozone layer, over-increasing of carbon oxide in the atmosphere, pollution of water and destroy of forest.  If one resort much to the experience of the past, he/she may not take these problems into account, and decide to enlarge the industry limitlessly, in that the ancient almost have no idea on the issues -- no matter(either...or) the shrinking of Amazon rain forest or the disease caused by dirty water is out of the scope of their imagination.  Thus, as to some problems faced today, one need (to) appeal to the modern learning to make a better choice, rather than the past.

However, as long as what happens in the past is usually(still 与as long as 对应) the precedent of what society encountered today, history generally acts as a good manual for the contemporaries. (good example) Hence, thanks to the experience of the past, one can make decision in a more suitable and easy way.

本文写得不错,思路清晰,例子也挺好.只是语句上有些单一,要多准备几个句式比较好. 个人观点.
